At random: Probably the most expensive ballast ever carried by a ship was two tons of gold and eighteen tons of silver coins carried by the U.S. submarine TROUT while on a trip from Corregidor to Pearl Harbor early in World War II. TROUT had removed her moveable ballast to allow for a larger cargo of ammunition to be transported for the defenders on the embattled island. Lcdr. Fenno, TROUT's CO, planned on replacing the ballast with sand bags, but found none were available. The gold and silver from the Bank of the Philippines was substituted as ballast, which also solved the problem of removing the treasure to a safe place prior to invasion by the enemy.

BRITTON, Ralph Bray, 81, passed away Saturday, March 8, 2008, at his home in Carillon Beach, FL. He was born in Birmingham, AL, was a member of the U.S. Navy during World War II and served aboard the submarine USS Tusk (SS-426), graduated from Birmingham-Southern College and retired as CFO of Altec Industries Inc. He was a member of the Alabama Society of CPAs, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Financial Executives Institute. Mr. Britton was preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Mazie Britton; and brother, Robert Harold Britton. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Rosezella Rowell Britton; daughter, Rhonda (Tom) Gallaspy; son, Ronald (Kathy) Britton; brother, Jim (Faye) Britton; grandchildren, Heather (Patrick) McGuire, Harrison Bray Britton and Noel Taylor Britton; seven nieces and nephews; and his beloved Gallaspy family. He will be remembered as a loving husband and father. He was a wonderful role model and a person of great character with strong convictions and a joyous sense of humor. He will be greatly missed by all whose lives were touched by this gentle man. A memorial service will be held today, March 10, 2008, at Carillon Beach, for immediate family and local friends. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 13, 2008, at Johns-Ridout's Chapel, Southern Heritage Cemetery, 475 Cahaba Valley Road, Pelham, Ala., with burial to follow. The officiating minister will be the Rev. Elaine Gallaspy Hagenbuch. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, 2008, at Johns-Ridout's Chapel. If desired, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Covenant Hospice of Panama City, 107 W. 19th St., Panama City, FL 32405, or to Children's Harbour, 1 Our Children's Highway, Children's Harbour, AL 35010-8620, Attn: Jim Ray.


GOMEZ, Frederick Eugene "Gene", 81, passed away March 7, 2008. He was born July 15, 1926 in Stanton, Texas to Patricio and Thelma Gardner Gomez. The family relocated to Tucson when Gene was three months old. He joined the US Navy in 1943 and saw combat in the Pacific during WWII. He made the US Navy his career, became a submariner in 1956 and was accepted into the nuclear power program in 1959. He was the first Chief aboard the USS Plunger (SSN-595), one of the first nuclear powered submarines, when it was launched in 1962. After his retirements from the US Navy as EMCS (SS) in 1965, he joined the Commercial Union Insurance Co. as a safety engineer and retired in 1982. Gene is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Martha, his four daughters, Gayle Floyd (Marc), Glynna Allen (Richard), Jan Collins (Kevin), and Lori Schultz (J.R.), 13 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and his sisters Peggy Thomas (Dean) and Barbara Marlow (C.H.). We will miss his sense of humor and his loving dedication to his family. Funeral service 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 11, 2008 at BRING'S MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 236 S. Scott, with Pastor Jim Munns officiating. Burial will be in Tucson Memorial Park South Lawn. Friends may call from 12:30 p.m. until service time on Tuesday, March 11.
