MANCHESTER - Charles "Charlie" Bernard Scheys Sr., 82, died Thursday, March 13, 2008, at Elliot Hospital.
Mr. Scheys was born March 18, 1925, in Detroit, the son of the late Rene and Ethel (Stanton) Scheys.
He was a graduate of the East Detroit Junior High School and the Lawrence (Mass.) Evening High School.
He served in the U.S. Navy and later served in the U.S. Navy Reserve for a total of 30 years. On Jan. 13, 1979, he married Cecile L. Gendron.
He was involved in many civic organizations. He was a member of Tuscan Lodge, A.F. & A.M., and affiliated with Horace Chase Lodge 72, F. & A.M., in Penacook. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite Consistory and Commandery and the Bektash Temple, AAONMS. In 1995, he served as potentate of the Bektash Temple. He participated as an active member in many Shrine clubs and American Legion Post 112 in Epsom. He was a life member of the National Submarine Veterans of World War II and the New Hampshire chapter of the NSV of World War II.
He enjoyed water sports, fishing, boating and golf, and he loved woodworking and carpentry.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Constance (Durgin) Scheys; stepmother, Angela Scheys; and stepson Roger H. Gendron.
He is survived by his family, including his wife, Cecile L. Scheys of Manchester; four children, Georgia F. Campbell of Dover, Charles B. Scheys Jr. of Chichester, Douglas E. Scheys of Newmarket and Robert D. Scheys of Detroit; three stepchildren, Roland W. Gendron of Candia, Gary C. Gendron of Manchester and Cynthia R. Ullrich of Manchester; two sisters, Margaret Wolfe of Lexington, Mich., and Elizabeth Lund of Lake Havasu, Ariz.; brother Robert Scheys of Florida and Michigan; stepsiblings Thomas Scheys of Detroit, James Scheys of Ann Arbor, Mich., Rene Scheys of Eastside, Mich., and Catherine Rappaport of North Carolina; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Goodwin Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 607 Chestnut St. in Manchester.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Burial with military honors will follow at New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Shrine Hospitals or Bektash Temple Transportation Fund, both c/o Bektash Shrine Center, P.O. Box 4086, Concord 03302; or the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery, 110 Daniel Webster Highway, Route 3, Boscawen 03303.

Charlie was an ENC(SS) who served on active duty from March 22, 1942 until June 6, 1946. Assignmets include SubDiv 101, USS Pickerel (SS-177), USS Drum (SS-228),
USS Flying Fish (SS-229), and USS Sea Owl (SS-405).
