DAVIS, Charles E. "Old Dave", 86, entered into rest on Friday, March 7, 2008, but will live on in the hearts and memories of those who knew and loved him. Old Dave was born in Pennsylvania, where he graduated from high school. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1942 and retired after 21 years of honorable service. He was a submariner on the USS Tunney (SS-282), USS Menhaden (SS-377), USS Blackfin (SS-322), USS Tusk (SS-426), USS Sealion (SS-315) and the USS Darter (SS-227). He is a veteran of WWII and the Korean War. He was a 30-year resident of Vista, CA when he retired as a Pipefitter from the U.S. Government (Camp Pendleton). As an avid golfer most of his adult life, he and Char were founding members of the Vista Valley Country Club. He enjoyed watching/feeding birds and wildlife, as well as creating/building woodwork projects for family and friends. When he no longer could enjoy golf, he moved to Lake Havasu City, AZ and then to Fallbrook, CA to be closer to his family. Old Dave was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Charlene and is survived by his children and their spouses: Jane (Gnarini) and Gabriel Torres, Nancy and Bob Praytor, Todd and Sharon Davis; his grandchildren, Lisa and Holly Davis and Noah and Nick Praytor. In honor of Old Dave's wishes, no serves will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to his favorite charity, Disabled American Veterans (DAV) or to Hospice of the Valley. Berry-Bell & Hall Mortuary is handling arrangements (760) 728-1689


HAYES, Robert E. Lee, of Hampton Va., passed away March 13, 2008, after a long illness. He was born in Dunbar, West Virginia in 1923 and moved to Virginia in 1933. Following his graduation from Morrison (Warwick) High School, he entered the Navy in September 1942, and served on the submarines USS Sunfish (SS-281) and USS Mapiro (SS-376) in the Pacific Theatre until the end of WWII. He was an alumnus of the University of Virginia, receiving a BS in Commerce in 1953.
Mr. Hayes relocated to Hampton, Va., working for the Pure Oil Company. He continued his career in the Hampton Roads area with Johnson Wimsatt Inc./ Boise Cascade Lumber Company. Mr. Hayes joined A.L. Williams/Primerica, investment and securities, through which he became regional vice-president. Mr. Hayes served on the Board of Directors of the Peninsula Home Builders Association, the White Hall Club and was past president of the National Who Who Org., as well as past president of the Sertoma Club in the Hampton Roads area. Through his work as a foster grandparent with Peninsula Foster Grandparent Program, Mr. Hayes received a service award for recognition of his work from the White House. He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary P. Hayes (nee Saunders) and wife, Mary Hatt Hayes, and his sister, Helen Graham Phillips. He is survived by his son, John A. Hayes of Newport News; his daughter, Katherine S. Crissie of Chicago, Ill; his grandsons, John Scott Hayes and Michael Carey Hayes of Newport News, Greg Charles Hayes of North Carolina, Brian Scott Crissie and Michael Steven Crissie of Chicago, Ill; his great great-grandchildren, Cory Alexis Hayes and Payton Reilly Hayes of Newport News; his sister, Oaklee Hayes-Hyder of Oregon; niece, Janet Phillips Mitchell of Oklahoma; and lifelong friends, William Atkinson of Mexico and Margaret Haynes of Hampton. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home of Hampton with visitation from 3 to 5 p.m. today, March 16. An intimate service will be held at Parklawn-Wood by the pastor, the Rev. Dennis Peters from First Friends' Church at 10 a.m. Monday, with a private ceremony to follow at Hampton Memorial Gardens Cemetery.


Morrison, Robert M., Lt., Huntington Beach Police Department, Ret., 77, passed away Saturday, March 8th 2008 at his son's home in Petoskey MI. A long-time resident of Huntington Beach, CA, Bob moved to Petoskey in December 2007 to be with his family. Bob was born on October 18th, 1930 in Windsor, Colorado. During the Korean War Bob enlisted and served as a radioman in the U.S. Navy Submarine Service. After being discharged he settled in Compton, California where he attended college and then began a career in law enforcement as a patrolman for the City of Compton. He later served in the Juvenile Bur. and ended his career in Compton as a Homicide Investigator. In 1966 Bob accepted a position with the Huntington Beach Police Department. Bob founded the Aero Bureau for the City of Huntington Beach in 1969 and managed it for the next 20 years. Bob retired from H.B.P.D. in 1989. He served as an early President of the national Airborne Law Enforcement Assoc. and served on its Bd. of Dir.'s for many years. A memorial service will be held at the Robert M. Morrison Heliport in Huntington Beach, CA. on April 4th at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to Huntington Beach Search & Rescue Post #563.
