HALL, Edward Duane, 83, of Missoula, MT a World War II Navy veteran, died of natural causes Thursday March 13, 2008 at his home. Ed was born in 1924 in Devils Lake, N.D., to Edward James and Kathleen Hall. His family moved to Great Falls, where he graduated from Great Falls High School and enlisted in the Navy. He was stationed at Mare Island, Calif., and served in the Pacific theater aboard the submarine USS Sunfish (SS-281). In 1949, Ed married Freda L. Stern of Great Falls. They began their married life in Libby, where he was employed by the U.S. Forest Ser-vice. They returned to Great Falls, where he worked for several farm implement and heavy-construction companies before relocating to Missoula in 1965. They remained in Missoula the rest of their lives. Ed was employed by Westmont Tractor and Long Machinery until his retirement. As a proud WWII veteran, Ed was a longtime member of the Submarine Veterans of WWII and for several years held the position of state commander. He was privileged to lay a wreath at Pearl Harbor to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. He was also an invited guest at the commissioning of the USS Helena in Groton, Conn. He was a member of the Holland Club, as well as a member of US Submarine Veterans, Inc. Ed was interested in studying and preserving the prehistoric Indian culture within the state of Montana, particularly in Meagher County. As a skilled amateur photographer, Ed captured many beautiful pictures of his much-loved state of Montana. He also was an avid collector of antiques and collectibles and frequented many flea markets throughout Montana. A loving, caring and devoted husband and father, Ed was deeply loved and will be sincerely missed. His memorial service is 11 a.m. Thursday at First Lutheran Church in Missoula, with a light lunch to follow at the fellowship hall. Burial will take place in the Missoula Veteran's Cemetery. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Garden City Funeral Home in Mis-soula. Survivors include his wife, Freda; daughters Michal (David) Malouf of Missoula and Kathleen (Steven) Milo of Lincoln, CA; his daugh-ter-in-law, Terri Hall of La Pine, OR; his grandchildren, Benjamin (Jessica) Malouf of Missoula, Patrick and Spencer Milo of California, and Chenise Hall of Oregon. Other cherished family members include Willard P. Schrupp and Matha Karagiosis of Great Falls; a beloved niece, Jeri Logan of Missoula; and every one of his shipmates from the USS Sunfish. He was preceded in death by his son, David Hall. The family suggests memorials in Ed's name to Partners Hospice Care or to the Organ Fund at First Lutheran Church in Missoula.
