At random: Probably the most expensive ballast ever carried by a ship was two tons of gold and eighteen tons of silver coins carried by the U.S. submarine TROUT while on a trip from Corregidor to Pearl Harbor early in World War II. TROUT had removed her moveable ballast to allow for a larger cargo of ammunition to be transported for the defenders on the embattled island. Lcdr. Fenno, TROUT's CO, planned on replacing the ballast with sand bags, but found none were available. The gold and silver from the Bank of the Philippines was substituted as ballast, which also solved the problem of removing the treasure to a safe place prior to invasion by the enemy.

Subject: Obit Messenger results for 03/22/08.

ERICKSON, RonJon, 63, died March 19, 2008 at Tacoma General Hospital after suffering a heart attack. He was born in Tacoma, WA to Art and Ruth Erickson on February 27, 1945. After brief service as a submarine sailor in the U.S. Navy, he worked as a floor layer for many years. RonJon is survived by his two older brothers, Ed and Walt, as well as his three children, Amanda, John and Chris. A Memorial service will be held in the Garden Chapel at Mountain View Funeral Home on Saturday, March 22, at 1:00pm.


RADABAUGH, Forrest "Red", 86, passed away March 18, 2008. He was born October 16, 1921 into a family of 10 children on a farm in Norton, Ohio and was a life resident of the Norton/Barberton area. Red proudly served in the US Navy Submarine Corp for four years during World War II, worked for Chrysler Corp., and then became the owner and operator of Radabaugh Electric with his son for over 40 years. It was in that line of work that he was able to use his talent and love for inventing and building things. He enjoyed playing cards, reading, gardening and animals. He loved to laugh and enjoyed life and especially being with his grandchildren. Red was a former member of St. George Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Genevieve; sisters, Alta, Bea, Virginia; brothers, Carl, Jess and Don. He will be greatly missed by his son, Michael Radabaugh; daughters, Rebecca Radabaugh, Kim (Tom) Walsh and Sue Porkorney; brother, Garn (Margo) Radabaugh; sisters, Dottie Reynolds and Mary (Richard) Just; grandchildren, Michael, Adrianna, Alexandria, Kyle and Isabella. The family would like to express their thanks to the Hospice Staff, especially Diane, for the care of their father. Friends may call on Monday, March 24, 2008 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Bacher Funeral Home, 3250 Greenwich Rd., Norton. Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Frances DeSales Catholic Church. Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery. Military honors by Firestone V.F.W. Post 3383. Ken, as always, thanks for your devotion to submariners' obits.

Had already signed Radabaugh online guest book as had spotted initial story in local newspaper. Least I can do.
