At random: Long considered a versatile and deadly instrument of war, the submarine has broadened her capabilities with the adoption of nuclear power. Today the submarine serves as a ballistic missile platform, early warning station, killer of surface and underwater vessels, scout, coastal raider troop transport, supply ship, mine layer, and seaplane tender.

Joe, that's just the 'official explanation'!
The real reason is so he has a stress-release device; head out to the range or a safe spot in the boonies, fire off a box of ammo, while imagining the targets are those twits who've managed to pique his ire. Besides, nothing clears the sinuses like a whiff of cordite after a good shooting session.

Why buy that when you can get this for $250? Sure it's 30 years old, but it's my beauty!

I've already replied with more details on Rontini's.

John, I think the general price range is around $350 or so....but I have two 870's (12 guage) and a model 97 winchester. The winchester has an 18" barrel and until the feed/ejection started acting up was my favorite rabbit and skeet gun.

I did find out that Mossberg offers an 18 barrel for the 870 for about $100. I ordered one from Cabelas and it works great! I now have an 870 with the plug removed and loaded with alternating 00 buck and deer slugs. When/if I want to go hunting, I need to put the plug back in and decide it I want the longer barrel!

I still have the Winchester 97, but it may go with me to the next gun show to see what I can get for it.....

Edited to add the following:

JOhn, I found this post on the net after I posted.....you may be able to find an NIB for less than $300::

I almost bought a NIB Mossberg 500 from a shop here for about $300 but something told me to hold off. I did and on another forum I saw a Remington 870 18" barrel, extended magazine, black (oooo evil haha) NIB for $275. I talked him down to $225 shipped to my FFL (who didnt charge me). I'd say that I love it but it has been hanging out in my "safe" since Thanksgiving. I will bring it out next weekend for the 1st time.

20" barrel with an 8 round magazine extension. That's all ya need! It's 2 3/4" chamber though, so I can't shoot the new 3" shells, but what the heck.

Down here in the South, used Remington 870 Wingmasters are EVERYWHERE.

John

try www.gunbroker.com That will give you an idea of what to expect as far as price. I think that you are looking at the home defense model.
