At random: Interests in submarines extends to royalty and presidents. The King of England and the King and Queen of Spain are among those who have made submerged cruises in submarines. As a result of a trip in an early United States submarine, President "Teddy" Roosevelt ordered extra compensation for personnel serving in the "Silent Service." President Harry Truman made a 440 foot dive in a captured German submarine. The first President to cruise aboard a nuclear submarine was President Eisenhower who rode the USS SEAWOLF out of Newport, Rhode Island on September 26, 1957.

Last Sunday I found 200 lost slides, a few I took while aboard my qual boat. Take a look:

Thanks Gary. Nice photographs. I especially enjoyed the scenes from the Bridge, which bring back fond memories from 40 years ago. I was also happy to see the picture of the bell. I recently acquired a rusted bell from the Kodiak area that appears to be identical to the one depicted in your photo and that matches my memory of the Pickerel’s bell. “USN” is inscribed on it, but it bears no name. I would like to think that it is a submarine bell, because Kodiak had an active submarine base during the war.

Did I read somewhere, sometime a while back, that boat's bells were removed before going on patrol? If so, that might explain your find.

Might be so. I imagine that the odds are very long on it being from a sub. But, who knows? At any rate, I'm going to clean it up and have someone fabricate a clapper for it, as it lacks one now. It would look pretty good mounted on the wall next to my desk.
