CARTY, David William, 49, of Franklin, TN, died March 22, 2008. David, raised in his early years in Portland, OR, was a 1977 graduate of Williamsport Area High School in PA. He was a graduate of the United States Naval Academy, Class of 1981, and Valedictorian of his MBA class at Kent State University in Ohio. Upon receiving his commission in the Navy, he was selected for the Nuclear Submarine Service in the last group approved by Admiral Rickover. He served four years on the USS Glenard P. Lipscomb (SSN685). After leaving the Navy in 1986, he worked for Lukens Steel Co. in Coatesville, PA and in various management positions in Chicago, IL, Birmingham, AL, Cleveland, OH, Lancaster, PA, Valparaiso, IN, and Brentwood, TN, until his death for what is now ArcelorMittal, USA. Until his health declined, he was involved in competitive and recreational bicycling as well as providing leadership for his children in Scouting and coaching in the Girls Softball Association of Franklin. Survived by wife, Sarah Stelle Carty; son, Garrett Carty; daughters, Shannon and Sheridan "Kate" Carty all of Franklin, TN; parents, Bill & Janet Carty of Dalton, MA; brothers, Robert (Cherie) Carty of Germantown, WI, Peter (Carmina) Carty of San Clemente, CA & Timothy (Kathy) Carty of Charlton, MA; sisters Jeanmarie (Glenn) Lawson of Pittsfield, MA and Elizabeth (Jason) Yantorno of Stamford, CT; sisters in law, Beth Stelle Jones of DesMoines, IA and Anne Stelle Cole of Chicago, IL; several nieces & nephews. Services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday, March 28, 2008, at Franklin First United Methodist Church, Dr. Lynn Hill, Rev. Roger Parker, and Rev. Vona Wilson officiating. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, the Wounded Warrior Project, or a charity of your choice . Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Williamson Memorial Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church. O’NEILL, Walter (n), 87, of Hampstead, NH passed away Sunday, March 23, 2008 at the Parkland Medical Center, Derry, NH. He was born in Boston and was the son of the late Thomas and Annie F. (Kelly) O'Neill. Walter was raised and educated in Malden. He owned and operated the former O'Neill Oil Service Company in Malden and the former Pennywise Oil Company in Atkinson, NH. He was a World War II veteran and served with the US Army and U.S. Navy. During his service with the Army he was in the tank division and during his service with the Navy he was on the submarine USS Archer-Fish (SS-311). He was a Commander and Past Commander of the American Legion Post 210 of Saugus, a member of the Knights of Pythias of Malden, and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Walter loved music and loved to sing. He was an accomplished Irish Tenor and sang in church choirs and local choral groups and was a warm and wonderful family man. He is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Bertha "Betty" (Burke) O'Neill; a son, Walter O'Neill Jr. and his wife Bikki of Independence, Mo.; daughters, Kathleen R. Meaney of Hampstead, N.H. and Ohio, Judith A. Perry of Hampstead, N.H. and Peggy Racicot and her husband Doctor David Racicot of Suffolk, Va.; sister, Mildred Lalime of Norwalk, Conn. There are 13 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Thomas and Richard O'Neill and father-in-law of the late James Perry. Relatives and friends may call on Thursday, March 27, 2008 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Brookside Chapel & Funeral Home, 116 Main St., Route 121A, Plaistow, N.H. His funeral will be held on Friday at 9:30 a.m. from the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. in St. Anne's Church, Emerson Ave., Hampstead, N.H. Burial will take place in West Hampstead Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made in his memory to the Alzheimer's Association, 311 Arsenal St., Watertown, MA 02472.


RODERICK, Jr., Theodore Scott "Ted", 90, passed away March 24, 2008, in Chesapeake Regional Medical Center. He was born in Youngstown, Ohio, and was the son of the late Theodore Scott Roderick Sr. and Mary McLaughlin. Soon after Ted's birth, his family moved to Warren, Ohio. Ted was an Eagle Scout and graduated from Warren G. Harding High School in 1936. In 1937, he won an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy and graduated in February 1941. His first duty assignment was in the North Atlantic aboard the USS Du Pont. At the start of World War II, he transferred to the submarine service in the Pacific, serving aboard the USS Stingray (SS-186) and USS Torsk (SS-423). During the war he married Mary Frances Taylor, his long- time sweetheart of Norfolk. In 1949 while serving in China, he resigned his commission to spend more time with his family. After the Navy, he soon found employment as a plant manager and then as an electrical engineer. He worked for a number of years in California for General Cable Corp. until retiring in 1978. He and Frances returned to Virginia Beach, where they attended Lynnhaven Colony Congregational Church, and he volunteered as a docent for the Norfolk Zoo. He was an avid golfer and, until recently, belonged to the Virginia Beach Senior's Golf Club. Ted is survived by his son, Theodore Scott III and his wife June of Glen Rock, N.J.; his son, John Christopher and his wife Lorie of Williamsburg; and he is also survived by his four grandchildren, Susan, Stephen, Sarah and Evan. In addition to his loving wife, Frances, he is preceded in death by his four sisters, Dorothy, June, Natalie, and Ginny, and two brothers, Bob and Dick. A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at H. D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Southeastern Chapter, 6315 North Center Drive, Suite 233, Norfolk, VA 23502-4006.
