PATTEN, John R., CAPT, USN, Ret., 71, died Friday March 28, 2008. He was born on April 13, 1936, in Newark, N.J., the son of Arthur E. Patten and Margaret (Brewster) Patten. When he was 3 years old, his family moved to Vermont and he always considered himself a Vermonter. He was educated in Vermont schools, including four years in a one-room school, and graduated from Rutland (Vt.) High School in 1954. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1959 and began a 24-year career as an officer in the United States Navy. Almost all of his first 18 years were spent at sea in submarines, including three-and-a-half years in command of USS George C. Marshall (SSBN-654), a nuclear-powered Fleet Ballistic Missile Submarine. The ship received many awards and citations during his tour in command. He was Executive Officer on USS Seadragon when that veteran submarine made its final under-ice operation in 1973. In addition to ten SSBN strategic deterrent patrols, including six as commanding officer, he deployed to the North Atlantic, Western and Northern Pacific, and Mediterranean Sea. In his many years at sea he saw many fascinating sights, most of them through a periscope, and many of them are still classified. In 1983, John retired from the Navy and moved to Champaign, accepting a position at Illinois Power Company's Clinton Power Station. He entered the investment business in 1993 and was employed at Morgan Stanley at the time of his death. A lifelong Episcopalian, he was a member of Emmanuel Memorial Episcopal Church in Champaign, where he was a licensed lay-reader and very active in parish activities. John was a member of many organizations including the Naval Academy Alumni Association, Military Officers Association, Submarine League, C-U Kiwanis Club, United States Submarine Veterans, Inc., American Legion, and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Visitation will be held at Emmanuel Memorial Episcopal Church on Tuesday, April 1, from 4 to 7 p.m. A funeral service with full military honors will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 2. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Owens Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Condolences may be offered at www.owensfuneralhomes.com.
