At random: The first submarine which actually sank another enemy vessel under combat conditions was the CSS HUNLEY built during the Civil War. The Union frigate HOUSATONIC on blockade station off Charleston, S. C. was the victim. The incident occurred on February 17, 1864.

it is on the Pampanito virtual tour and is a shot in the conning tower. It shows the scope and the handle sure looks like this one.

I don't think the handel is off a USN periscope..The bar at the botton is not consistant with the periscopeshandels that I am farmilar with.

Slow answer, sorry - looks like it came from a Type 8-B to me. The oversized square bezel is a clue.
