At random: In World War II the Germans lost 782 submarines, the Japanese lost 130, Great Britan and Commonwealth countries lost 88 subs, Russia lost 110 submarines and the United States lost only 52 submarines. Twenty-three of the Japanese subs lost were victims of the American Submarine Service.

LENHARD, Walter George, 70, of Leesburg, Fla., died Sunday, March 30, 2008. Born in Bronx, NY, he moved to Florida from Gales Ferry, CT in 1997. Mr. Lenhard retired as a senior chief from the US Navy. He was employed by General Dynamics from where he retired as a supervisor for nuclear testing facilities. He was a Catholic, and a member of the Submarine Veterans, Fleet Reserve and the NRA. He is survived by his wife, Annaliese Lenhard, of Leesburg; children, Walter George Lenhard Jr. of Brookfield, Wis., Donna Marie Lenhard of Montville, and Christina Theresa Marshall of Springfield, Tenn.; grandchildren, Nicholas, Megan, Emma and Olivia; and brothers, George Lenhard of Santa Fe, NM, John Lenhard of Homassasa, FL, and Anthony Lenhard of Medford, NY. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 3, 2008 at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, with Deacon Fred Giel officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 237 East Marks St., Orlando, FL 32803. Beyers Funeral Home and Crematory, Leesburg, is in charge of arrangements. 352-787-4343


McCONNELL, Julian C., died March 23, 2008. He was born in 1932 in Miami, FL. Graduated from Columbia University and earned an MA there. Taught in high schools in Westchester County, NY and in senior high schools in Pinellas County as a teacher of English Literature, retiring in 1991. He served in the US Navy Submarine Service during the Korean conflict. Survivors include his wife Diana, their son Mark, and two grandchildren. Brett Funeral Home
