GRADY, William C., 88, of Holyoke left for his final patrol on April 1, 2008 from the Holyoke Soldiers Home after a short illness. “Bill” was born on December 25, 1919 in Holyoke to John and Hazel (Williamson) Grady. He graduated from Holy Rosary High School in 1938, voted the best looking boy. He was a CCC boy. In 1939 Bill enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving as one of the Navy's elite, a submarine sailor in the South Pacific. Bill partook on too many patrols and missions to mention; he was honored with numerous combat medals and commendations. Mr. Grady was a true hero who never bragged of his many dangerous and courageous missions. A shipmate on the submarine USS Pampanito (SS-383) wrote an article for the Polaris Magazine stating through the heroic efforts of Bill Grady alone the crew and submarine were saved. Bill was a true hero in war and peace. In 1947, Bill along with his father-in-law and friend, Fred Morin founded Central Heating Corp. He was a member of Pipe fitters and Plumbers Local 104 serving on several committees. Bill attended several seminars and courses at the University of Connecticut obtaining his Registered Professional Mechanical Engineers license. He was a member of the ASHRAE and held several offices. In 1982, along with his wife Jean established TechnicTherm Corp. He tried retirement in 1990 but found it lacking and dull. He was a Consulting Engineer for Robert Hall Engineers of Agawam. Bill was active in Submarine Veterans Association of Western Mass where he has held many offices. Bill was held with high regard from all its members and associate members. A member of the Holland Club for WWII Submarine Sailors, he attended several reunions for WWII Submarine Sailors of the Pacific fleet. Bill was an avid Red Sox, NE Patriots, and Boston Bruins fan. His wife, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren will miss him. But the words heroic, hard working, smart, fair, brave, patient, supportive, loving, and loved, well-respected, handy, innovative, great sense of humor and persistent will remind us all of him. He leaves his cherished wife of 64 years Jean (Morin) Grady, the love of his life. His beloved children, Barbara J. Grady and William F. Grady of Holyoke; four idolized grandchildren, Chris (Jill), Beau, Matt (Sally) Reardon and Sarah Grady, all of Holyoke; eight great grandchildren, Brian, Emily, Sean, Brett, Kelly, Marley, Topher Reardon and Richard Houle. Mr. Grady also leaves nieces and nephews especially Thomas Grady. Bill also leaves special friends including Lil Breen, Christine Grady, and Lorri Reardon.
