MAJOR, John B., 83, formerly of Edgewood, PA died Saturday, April 5, 2008, after a short illness of pancreatic cancer. He served in the submarine service in WWII. He was a graduate of Penn State and received his masters in mathematics at Columbia University. John was a lifelong educator. He taught math and science at Williamsburg (VA) HS and worked with student teachers at William & Mary. He was the chairman of the math dept. at Freeport HS in Long Island and the Principal of the Junior and Senior High School in Edgewood, PA. John was an engineer at Sperry Rand in Bristol, TN and Lake Success, NY and General Manager at Whitaker Metal Co. in Pgh., PA. He was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Wilkinsburg, PA where he taught Sunday school and served on several committees within the church. He was President of the Library Board in Edgewood, a member of council and Mayor of Edgewood. A maple tree grows there, planted in honor of his service to the Borough. John leaves wife Wanda of 56 years, daughter Wanda E. Major married to Barry Douglas, son Andrew B. Major and his wife Gail as well as five grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held in the Johnson Auditorium at Willow Valley North, 600 Willow Valley Square, Lancaster, PA on Thursday, April 10, 2008 at 9:30 AM. RANSOMP, Stephen C., 60, a true son of Texas and proud heir to the Confederacy, was born in Houston, Texas to Willard and Melba Ransom on September 3, 1947 and passed away at his home in Caldwell, Texas on April 6, 2008. Steve attended Stephen F. Austin High School in Houston, Texas. His family was proud of his service to his country as a Vietnam veteran where he served aboard the submarine, the USS Catfish (SS-339). Following his naval service, he graduated from Texas A&M University with a degree in Chemical Engineering. Steve worked and lived for seventeen years in Saudi Arabia as a chemical engineer for ARAMCO. While living in Saudi Arabia, he developed a love for exploring the Arabian Desert where he was able to indulge his passions for history and archeology. He enjoyed an early retirement beginning in 1997, at the home he built in his beloved Texas where he lived out his life with his wife Sherry of 39 years and their many four-legged companions. He had a passion for genealogy and spent many hours researching his ancestors. His days were filled with gardening, and enjoying the outdoors with his dogs and favorite cold beverage. He was a lifetime member of the Caldwell VFW, Post #4458. Until his illness, he enjoyed weekly volunteer bartending duty, along with his dog Socks, at the VFW, and hearing the many stories told by the members there. He is preceded in death by his father, Willard A. Ransom, Sr. He is survived by his mother, Melba Ruth Remington and stepfather Herb Remington of Houston; his brother, Willard A. Ransom, Sr. (Sonny) of Houston; his loving wife of 39 years Sherry Lee Witcher Ransom; his beautiful children, Eric Scott Ransom and wife Amy of Wincanton, England. His daughter Kristi Lee Ransom Munoz and husband Michael of Frisco, Texas. Grandchildren Kelsey Ransom, Matthew (The General) Ransom, Jonathan Munoz, Lucy Munoz and Madeline Munoz. Graveside services are set for 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, 2008 at Masonic Cemetery in Caldwell with Rev. Don Laird officiating. Interment will follow. Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Tuesday at Strickland Funeral Home in Caldwell. Serving as pallbearers are Michael Munoz, Randy Pyle, Shane Ransom, Mundy Ransom, Dale Fleck, and Paul Higgins. RICHTER, LeRoy Legrant, 55, of Moultrie, GA died Saturday, April 5, 2008, at his home. Born May 10, 1952, in Colquitt County, he was the son of the Rev. LeRoy Richter and Mervin Perkins Richter. He served in the United States Navy for six years, including a stint aboard the submarine USS Batfish (SSN-681). He owned and operated Richter Exterminating for 26 years, and attended the First Church of the Nazarene. He was preceded in death by a sister, Elaine Bruce. Survivors include his wife, Kathy Wood Richter of Moultrie; one daughter, Paige Whitaker Mathis of Moultrie; his parents of Moultrie; one brother, John Richter and wife Yeonnia of Higgston, Ga.; two sisters, Joanne Muse and husband Jerry and Peggy Byrd and husband Larry, all of Moultrie; two grandchildren, Kyle Grant Whitaker and Makayla Rayne Mathis; four brothers-in-law, Jerry Bruce of Tifton, Ricky Wood and wife Faye, Gary Wood and wife Kelly and Mark Wood and wife Marcella, all of Moultrie; one sister-in-law, Betty Pittman and husband Stan of Moultrie; fourteen nieces and nephews; and thirteen great-nieces and nephews. The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, April 7, at Cobb Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be 11 a.m., today, April 8, at First Church of the Nazarene, with the Rev. Michael E. WALTERS, Jr., August Willian, 1924-2008 Was born and raised in San Jose. He was the son of Francesca Narvaez and August William Walters Sr both natives of San Jose. He lived his childhood on Locust Street across from Woodrow Wilson Jr High which he had attended. He graduated from San Jose High School in 1942, and joined the submarine service. He married his high school sweetheart Marian Tanner in 1944 and lived with his wife on San Juan Ave in San Jose until his retirement a few years following his wife's death in 1982. He then bought a ranch in Angels Camp and worked the ranch until health required he return to city life. He married Molly Collpits in 1989, first living in Sacramento, and then moving with her to her native England. August returned to Sacramento from England in 1998. He then returned to San Jose after a severe illness. He spent his last year at the VA Hospital in Menlo Park. From 1942 until 1946 he served his country during World War II as a submarine torpedo man First Class, serving on the USS Jack (SS-259) and the USS Bugera (SS-331). He received a Presidential Citation for bravery. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars. The war had a deep impact on him. He vividly remembered every detail of the war and told riveting stories about his experiences. August was a sixth generation descendent of the Alviso, Amesquito, Bernal, Galindo and Pinto Families of the De Anza Expedition of 1775-1776 of whom several were the founding families of Pueblo San Jose. His great great grandfather Augustine Narvaez was Alcalde (Mayor) of San Jose in 1821, and was the recipient of the"San Juan Bautista" land grant given in 1844 by Governor Micheltorena. Its boundaries enclose most of San Jose's Hillsdale, and Willow Glen areas. August Walters was a member of the genealogy association Los Californianos. August was the son of August William Walters Sr. His grandfather William Walters came to San Jose in the mid 1800's. All were Master Butchers. August worked for his grandfather and his father in markets on Auzerais and Vine Streets and at First and Virginia streets. August, who was called Mike, had a market on Bascom and Union until fire destroyed it in the mid sixties. He worked for San Jose Meats and a variety of retail and wholesale places spending many years at Duke and Hanley Meats in Mid Town Market in Los Altos until his retirement. He was a member of Butcher's union Local 506 and a vocal supporter of workers' rights. August was active in his union. He had a keen mind and sharp memory and fascinated all who listened with his many stories of adventure as a submarine sailor, butcher, rancher and traveler. He is preceded in death by his first wife Marian Tanner, his daughter Pamela Jean Walters, his grandson Michael Andrew Walters and his sisters Gladys Colla and Edith Pimentel. He is survived by his son Ronald Walters, daughter Nancy Walters, his son-in-law Thomas Nycz, his four grandchildren Roger Walters, Jeffrey Walters, Tinna Marie Walters and John Paul Walters and two great grandchildren Tiddus and Luna. He had many wonderful friends. Visitation will be on Wed., April 9th 3-9pm at Chapel of Flowers, 900 South 2nd street in San Jose with Vigil Service at 7pm at above chapel. Mass will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church Thursday, April 10th at 9am, entombment to follow after mass.
