The minesweep USS Revenge.

I guess they went in to ensure the harbor was clear of mines before the balance of the fleet went in.

I also remember that the USS Buckeye (or possibly the Butternut) was right there up front if not first - we used both for salvage training in Hawaii (at HCU-1) many years later.  We sunk 'em, floated them, lite fires on them - you name it - but they continued to serve the fleet in doing so...

Right on Dallas..USS Revenge AM-110 followed by the Mine Sweepers Token,Tumult and Pochard were the first ships in to clear the mine fields with the Japanese pilot Lt.M.Ito of the once Imperial Japanese Navy providing liason.

"The USS Revenge, AM-110 leads Task Unit 31.2.2, consisting of the USS Token, AM-126, USS Tumult, AM-127 and USS Pochard, AM375 from Sagami Wan through Uraga Suido and into Tokyo Bay to be the first U.S. ships to enter Tokyo Bay after WWII. The Revenge had their sweep gear out."

Wish I could post the entire story. It's 7 magazine pages long, including deck log entries from the Revenge dated Tuesday 28 Aug 45., 6 photos, and a map of the Sagami Wan/Tokyo Bay area.

The deck log entries:
0000 to 0400: Underway using various curses and speeds in company with T.U. 31.2.2 plus U.S.S. Gwinn (DM33) operating in area north of O Shima. OTC is in USS GWINN (DM-33). This ship Number Two ship in port column. distance between ships 500 yards. Column interval 2000 yards. Standars speed 10 knots, 204 RPM. Ship darkened. Condition III, Material Condition Baker set. 0035 Changed base course to 000(symbol for degrees) T, 100 (degrees) PGC, 104 (degrees) PSC. 23345 OTC and Guide shifted to this vessel. U.S.S. GWINN (DM33) left formation. //signed J.C. Paty, Lt. (jg), USNR

0400 to 0800: Underway as before. 0521 Placed four engines on the line, standard speed 15 knots. Sweep Unit 21 commenced maneuvering on various courses and speeds preparing to sweep channel entrance to Tokyo Bat. 0547 commenced streaming port and starboard "O" type gear. 0613 completed streaming gear. 0628 Sweep Unit 21 composed of USS REVENGE (AM110), USS TOKEN (AM126), USS TUMULT (AM127), AND USS POCHARD (AM375) entered and commenced sweeping Uraga Suido to Tokyo Bay. Balance of T.U. 31.2.2 following astern formation. OTC, CTU 31.2.2, and Guide in this vessel. This vessel first to enter Tokyo Bay. //signed R.D. Loomis, Lieut., USNR

0800 to 1200: Underway as before. 0800 Mustered crew on stations. No absentees. 0808 Completed channel sweep of Uraga Suido and entered Tokyo Bay, proceeding to anchorage Area Fox to conduct sweeping operations. 0830 Entered and commenced sweeping Area Fox on northerly and southerly courses. 0837 Lost port sweep gear. continued sweeping. 11.2 Commenced streaming new port gear. 1137 Port gear restreamed. //signed R.D. Loomis, Lieut., USNR.

1200 to 1600: Underway as before. 1429 Commenced recovering sweep gear. 1501 All sweep gear recovered. This vessel awaiting other vessels of T.U. 31.1.2. 1535 Formed column formation, this vessel Guide, proceeding to Area Baker on various courses and speeds. 1547 Sweep unit commences streaming starboard "O" type sweep gear. 1559 This vessel completed streaming gear. //signed J.G. 1600 to 1800: Underway as before. 1602 completed streaming starboard sweep gear. 1605 Set Condition Afirm Modified. 1608 Proceeding to commence sweeping operations. 1724 Commenced recovery of sweep gear. 1746 All gear reovered, proceeding on varoous courses and speeds to Berth F-16 as assigned by CTG 31.2. //signed J.C. 1800 to 2000: Underway as before. 1816 Anchored in tokyo Bay, Japan, Beth Fox 16 in 10 fathoms of water, with 40 fathoms of chain to the starboard anchor on the following bearings: L.T. Aoshiba Saki (Pt.) 243 (degrees) T, L.T. Honoraku Hana (Pt.) 297 (degrees) T, Light Beacon 215 (degrees) T. 1824 Set Condition III (Split Watch). //sighed J.G. ORR, Lieut., USNR

Those deck logs are a great piece of history. Imagine what the crews were thinking as they entered Sagami Wan and moved up Tokyo Bay? With all the USN and allied naval might standing off shore, the sweeps had the honor of entering first.....
