At random: Probably the most expensive ballast ever carried by a ship was two tons of gold and eighteen tons of silver coins carried by the U.S. submarine TROUT while on a trip from Corregidor to Pearl Harbor early in World War II. TROUT had removed her moveable ballast to allow for a larger cargo of ammunition to be transported for the defenders on the embattled island. Lcdr. Fenno, TROUT's CO, planned on replacing the ballast with sand bags, but found none were available. The gold and silver from the Bank of the Philippines was substituted as ballast, which also solved the problem of removing the treasure to a safe place prior to invasion by the enemy.

DEEGAN, Harold Max, 88, passed away on Monday, March 31, 2008. Harold was born on April 28, 1919, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada and was a resident of El Cajon, CA. Harold worked as a Postal Delivery Person for the United States Postal Service and was also retired from the United States Navy. During his service in the Navy, Harold achieved the rank of Chief Radioman and served during both WWII and the Korean conflict. Harold was a member of the Submarine Veterans of WWII. Harold is survived by his wife, Mary Jo, also of El Cajon, CA, a daughter, Shirley Ann Surber, of Santee, CA and by a son, Gary Deegan, of Escondido, CA, a brother, Wilfred Deegan, of Santa Rosa, CA, as well as by four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A viewing for Harold was held at El Camino Memorial Sorrento Valley on Thursday, April 3, 2008. Burial was at El Camino Memorial Park, 5600 Carroll Canyon Road, San Diego, CA on Friday, April 4, 2008. Funeral Services for Harold were held at First Baptist Church of El Cajon, 190 E. Douglas, El Cajon, CA on Saturday, April 5, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. and were officiated by Pastor Kevin Rodgers. El Camino Memorial Sorrento Valley was in charge of the arrangements.


WILLIAMS, David Theodore, 87, passed away Sunday April 6, 2008. David was born July 16, 1920 to Roscoe and Gertrude Williams in Chicago, Illinois. He graduated from North Hollywood High School in Los Angeles, CA, where he excelled in gymnastics and high diving for the swim team.In 1937 he joined the U.S. Navy. His career took him to many beautiful locations such as: Guam, Hawaii, W. Virginia and California. During WWII he served on the USS Flasher (SS-249), the submarine that sunk the most enemy tonnage and received three Presidential Unit Citations. David was also awarded a European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre Campaign Medal, a Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Campaign Medal. He also served on the USS S-46 (SS-157)USS Ronquil (SS-396), USS Blackfin (SS-322), USS Sperry and finally at the USNH Corona in California before retiring in 1957.David was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 61 year, Marguerite Sylvia Williams, whom he married in Rockwall, TX, in March of 1942. He was also preceded in death by his parents and two brothers Carl and Walt.David is survived by his sister, Esther Hinthorne; two sons: Preston Williams and his wife Ruth of Norman, Brian Williams and his wife of Marlow, OK; four grandchildren: Angela Williams of Norman, Nathan Williams of Moyock, NC, Christopher Williams of Colorado Springs, CO and David Williams of Northern CA; five great-grandchildren: Zachary, Jacob, Joshua, Dagan and Gavin.A Memorial service will be held Sunday April 13th 2008 at 2:00pm at the Norman Veteran's Center. Any donations can be given to the Veteran's Center of Norman who took such great care of David during his stay there.Submitted by family
