At random: The first submarine which actually sank another enemy vessel under combat conditions was the CSS HUNLEY built during the Civil War. The Union frigate HOUSATONIC on blockade station off Charleston, S. C. was the victim. The incident occurred on February 17, 1864.

DREHER, Karl E., born January 19, 1945, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 13, 2008 after a brave battle with cancer. Karl was a proud Vietnam era veteran, having served in the US Navy for 6 years. He was a "nuc" aboard a nuclear submarine, the USS Nathan Hale (SSBN-623). Karl received his Bachelor's degree from Iowa State University and moved to El Paso in 1975. Karl was a home builder and home inspector, and worked with many area non-profit organizations. Karl was a wonderful husband and father. He loved life and enjoyed folk music and news radio. He is preceded in death by his parents Frederick and Grace Anna Dreher, his siblings John Dreher and Sue Schmidt, and his father-in-law Jesus Vazquez. He is survived by his wife, Cecy Vazquez, his children, Karly Ann Dreher, Karen Maria Dreher, Karl Jesus Dreher, Kristine Quintana, Katherine Quintana, and his granddaughter Claudia Aguilar, all of El Paso; his siblings Joseph F. Dreher, Lee Sanford, Frieda Calhoon (Larry), Fran Minear (Joe), Paul Dreher (Gloria) of the Neola, IA/Omaha, NE area; his mother-in-law, Maria Vazquez, sister-in-law, Josie Arreola (Gil) and brother-in-law Jesus Vasquez (Raquel) of El Paso and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 4:00-9:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, 2008 with a Vigil at 7:30 p.m. at Sunset Funeral Home-East. Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 16, 2008 at St. Mark's Catholic Church, Interment to follow at Ft. Bliss National Cemetery. LOW, Douglas Ward, 60, of Lincolnville, Maine died Sunday, April 6, 2008. Douglas was born in Rockville Center, N.Y. April 24, 1947. His life was full of accomplishments and loving family friends. Douglas served in the US Navy aboard the submarine USS Tullibee (SSN-597) from 1968 to 1972. Following his graduation from University of Connecticut Magna Cum Laude in 1976, Douglas and several associates formed International Marine Industries. After a lengthy career in the marine industry, he bought Ace Aviation. Douglass introduction to flying began in 1987, and remained his continuous passion as he perfected his skills and became qualified in every rating necessary to efficiently run the FBO at Belfast airport. His recent employment at Victron Energy, a Dutch manufacturer of power systems, has allowed the continuation of his love of flying with frequent business trips with his colleague and best friend, Doug Theobalds. This wonderful man has achieved excellence in everything he did including sailing, furniture making, and music through playing guitar, piano, string bass and flute. His best accomplishment has been as Husband to Linsey, Father to Lafe and Stefan, Father-in-law to Joan, Grandfather to Devin, Julia, Patrik and Conor, and friend to all others who were a part of his life. TINAGERO, Ramon L., 71, formerly of Oakland, Calif., passed away at 5 a.m. April 12, 2008. Ray was a life member of the VFW Post 1634. He served in both the Marine Corp. and Navy Submarine Service, both in Korea and Vietnam. He is survived by his wife, Clara; sons Gary, Terry, Jerry; and daughter Kate; two stepsons, Guy (Jodi) Sherman, Wayne (Opal) Sherman; one brother, Mike of California; and many grandchildren and many wonderful friends, who love and miss him dearly. Memorial service will be at the VFW Post 1634 at 139 Moore Lane, on Saturday, April 19, at 2 p.m. Reception to follow.


ZABIELSKI, Edward M., 82, died Saturday, April 13, 2008, at Ellis Hospital. He was born in Poland in 1926, the son of the late Walter and Julianna Kochanski Zabielski. Ed was a graduate of Mont Pleasant High School, and during World War II he held an electrician's rating as an enlisted man in the US Navy's submarine service. He later served as a captain in the U.S. Army Reserve and the U.S. Air Force Reserve, where he was assigned to the office of judge advocate general. He attended Purdue University before graduating from Siena College in 1950. Then Ed graduated from Albany Law School with honors in 1953 and was a member of the Justinian Society. He earned both a bachelor of law and a juris doctor of law degree, and was a member of the Albany Law Review. He was admitted to the New York State Bar the same year. Ed was awarded several scholarships while attending law school, and was recently designated a senior partner by the law school. He was the recipient of several awards in recognition of his service, most notably citations from the New York State Assembly and Senate and from the Schenectady County Bar Association for 50 years of distinguished service. Ed served more than 35 years as confidential law clerk to three Schenectady county, New York, Supreme Court justices. His career with the New York state Supreme Court system began in July 1954, working for the late Justice Charles M. Hughes, then in January 1969, for he late Justice Guy A. Graves, and in January 1987 he served the now retired Justice Robert E. Lynch. His years with the court system had only one brief break: in 1968, when he served as city corporation counsel of the city of Schenectady. As confidential law clerk, Ed was responsible for legal research, setting up and participating in conferences with attorneys, and writing memoranda for justices to consider in writing case decisions. Ed retired from the court system in April 1990. Since retiring, he did some consultation work and conducted a private law practice and served as an arbitrator with the American Arbitration Association. Ed was a member of the Schenectady County Bar Association as well as the New York State and American Bar Associations. Ed served as campaign coordinator for Mayor Malcolm E. Ellis in his re-election campaign of 1967. He was a past exalted ruler of the Schenectady Elks Lodge, a member of the Glens Falls Elks Club and the Lake George American Legion. Ed was vice president of the Schenectady Boys Club and served on its board of directors for 21 years. He was a director of Catholic Charities. He was a former counsel to the Schenectady Light Opera and a member of the Schenectady East Rotary Club and the Mohawk Club. He was a business law instructor at County Community College and served as vice president of the Howe School PTA. Ed drafted the first human donor transplant law, on behalf of the Rotterdam Lions Club, that was passed by the New York state Legislature and signed into law by Governor Nelson Rockefeller in 1957. Ed received a citation for bravery and heroism from the town of Niskayuna and the New York State Assembly for coming to the aid of a woman being held at gunpoint at the Mohawk Mall in Niskayuna, N.Y. on October 13, 1976. He was a member of the 70-Plus ski club of the Schenectady Winter Sports Club. He loved to ski, hike and camp on the islands of Lake George and was a proprietor of Cove Cottages on Bloody Pond Road. Ed is survived by his wife, Catherine; a son, Jeffrey and his wife, Dana; his daughters, Karen and Carol; three grandchildren: Gregory, Juliana and Carlee Zabielski; a sister, Stella Oldendorf of Los Angeles; and a brother, Dr. Chester V. Zabielski of Cambridge, Mass.; a sister-in-law, Mary Peek and her husband, Robert, and several nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers-in-law, Dr. William Oldendorf of Los Angeles and James Cavenaugh of Tobyhanna, Pa. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday morning, April 17, at 9 a.m. from St. John the Evangelist Church, Union Street. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Interment will follow in St. Adalbert Cemetery, Rotterdam. Calling hours will be held privately, at the convenience of the family.
