CUNNINGHAM, Claude Shirley, 84, Born on April 8, 1924 and passed away on April 13, 2008 at Linden Grove Care Center. Upon graduating from Jefferson Davis High School in Houston, Texas he enlisted in The United States Submarine Service, and served 22 and a half years. Upon retiring from the Navy, Claude went to work for John Hancock, Ins. Co. and retired after 25 years. Claude was a member of Afife Shriners, Scottish Rite, Tacoma Elks, Submarine Vets of WWII, and also active in The Republican Party. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Grace E. "Betty" Cunningham. Claude and Betty met at a U.S.O. dance in Portsmouth, NH. They were married in Exeter, NH in 1948 on Oct. 16th. They have four children, Claude Thomas Cunningham of Brown's Point, WA, Claudia Whittles and husband Doug of Steilacoom, WA, Robert A. Cunningham and wife Cheryl of Yelm, WA, David L. Cunningham and wife Judy of Ferndale, WA; 14 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Visitation will be held Thursday, April 17th from 1-8pm at The New Tacoma Funeral Home. Funeral service we be held on Friday, April 18th at 11am in the Chambers Creek Chapel at New Tacoma Cemetery.


HARRIS, Melvin Ray, 77, died April 13, 2008 in Fremont, CA. “Bob” was born November 27, 1930 in Granite City, Illinois to Frank and Lela Harris. Bob served in the United States Navy in the submarine service stationed at Pearl Harbor. He played baseball for SUBPAC where he won numerous batting titles. Bob was also stationed at Mare Island and the Alameda Naval Air Base. After 20 years as an electrician on submarines, he retired. After retiring from the Navy, Bob worked at General Motors as an electrician for 15 years and for the New Haven School District in maintenance for five years. Bob loved being with his family, whether it was traveling, camping, or water skiing. He enjoyed cooking his world famous chili for family and friends, watching boxing on TV and collecting knives. He was a friend to all. As his health started to decline, he never gave up planning that next trip he and Agnes were going to take or that next project he was going to start. Loving husband of 55 years to Agnes Mattos Harris. Devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather to his three sons and their families. Steven and Maryann, their daughters - Annamarie and Stefanie. Gary and Kathleen, their children - Nicole, Rachel, Lance, and Kevin. Michael and Judy, their children - Brandy, Danielle, Michael Jr., and their grandchildren - Jasmine, Amia, Alana, Savana, and Kayla. Caring brother to Robert E. Harris, brother-in-law to Agnes' brothers, sisters, their spouses, and uncle to their children. Friends and family are invited to visit Holy Angels Funeral & Cremation Center, 1051 Harder Rd., Hayward for viewing Thursday, April 17 between the hours of 5:00 - 8:30 PM with the vigil at 7:00 PM. The funeral will be Friday, April 18 at 1:00 PM beginning at Holy Angels with committal at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Bob's family would like to thank the Kaiser Home Health Care Nurses that helped take care of him for the last three years.


JOHNSON, Allen R., 81, passed away April 4, 2008, at Peachtree Retirement Village in Roswell, N.M., following a long illness. Allen was born on May 12, 1926 in Cloquet, Minn. He attended Cloquet Public Schools, graduating in 1946. Allen was a veteran of World War II, serving three years aboard a submarine, and was a lifetime member of Hebert-Kennedy VFW Post 3979. He was a firefighter with the Cloquet Fire Department for 31 years, retiring in 1983; was a PRIM instructor for the State of Minnesota for several years, and worked part-time at Best Oil Company for many years. Al was an avid hunter, fisherman, and golfer. After his retirement, he enjoyed golfing, traveling and spending time with his granddaughters. Allen was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Mable Johnson; and a brother, Clifford W. Johnson. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Revae; his daughter, Susanne (George) Timmerman, of Roswell, N.M.; two granddaughters, Amanda (Steven) Granado, of El Paso, Texas, and Sarah Timmerman of Seoul, South Korea; and a great-granddaughter, Alyssa Granado of El Paso, Texas. VISITATION:1 p.m. Wednesday, April 23, 2008 until the 2 p.m. memorial service in Nelson Funeral Care in Cloquet, followed with a time of fellowship in the funeral home. Inurnment services will be at Maple Grove Cemetery with full Military Honors presented by the Cloquet Combined Honor Guard.
