At random: ENS Sam Hunter, the first submarine casualty of WWII on Dec. 8, 1941. He was attached to Sea Dragon moored next to Sealion. He was killed by shrapnel from the first bomb hit on Sealion penetrating the conning tower of Sea Dragon. The second hit killed 4 men in Sealions Engineroom.

Subject: Obit Messenger results for 04/19/08

CRAWFORD, John Robert, 83, passed away Thursday, April 17, 2008 at his home in Palm Desert. Born on January 15, 1924 on Long Island he grew up in Valley Stream. Shortly after high school he joined the U.S. Navy, continuing studies while awaiting call to active duty. His navy training consisted of electronic specialty as a radio technician after which he volunteered for submarine duty. He served proudly as a qualified submariner on the USS Thornback (SS-418) in the Pacific fleet until the end of WWII. After returning home he continued his electronic engineering studies at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. Then he held several engineering and sales positions in the military electronic field until retirement in 1988 in Wilmington, NY and Dauphin Island, AL before a final move to Palm Desert, CA in 2003. He is survived by his daughter, Barbara Crawford; his son, William Crawford; 4 grandchildren, Courtney Crawford, Brittany Crawford, Stephanie Crawford and Michael Meccia. An outdoor service will be held at Palm Desert Civic Center Park in the Rose Garden on Saturday, April 19, 2008 at 11:00 AM.


KRAMER, Sr., George W., 78, Reading, PA died April 18, 2008, at 1:40 a.m. in the residence of his son, Karl Kramer. He was born October 24, 1929, in Laureldale and was a son of the late John R. and Leanor M. (Quimby) Kramer. He worked for 28 years as a draftsman for Lucent, formerly AT&T and Western Electric, retiring in 1984. He was a 1948 graduate of Muhlenberg High School. Kramer served in the Navy during the Korean War. He retired from the Army Reserves. He was a member of the Reading Base Submarine Veterans, as well the F&AM Lodge 62. George is survived by four daughters: Ann (Kramer) Kalbach, Hamburg; Maureen (Kramer) Christman, Temple; Jean (Kramer) Shirk, Bernville; and Kathlee (Kramer) Thomas, Spring Township; and three sons: George W. Kramer Jr., Auburn; Karl E. Kramer, Laureldale; and Jack F. Kramer, Temple. Other survivors include six grandchildren, two step grandsons and a step great-granddaughter. He was predeceased by his wife, Shirley A. (Ermold) Kramer, (who passed away September 2, 2005) and daughter, Elaine F. Kramer, who passed in 1987. Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the Bean Funeral Homes, 16th and Rockland streets, Reading, with the Rev. Mark E. Brophy officiating. Burial will be in Schwarzwald Lutheran Cemetery. Friends will be received Tuesday 10 to 11 a.m. in the funeral home. Contributions may be made to Caring Hospice, 400 Commerce Drive, C, Fort Washington, PA 19034, or Armed Forces Relief Trust, Department 6055, Washington, D.C. 20042.
