At random: The self-propelled torpedo, which gets its name from the eel TORPEDO ELECTRICUS, was invented by Robert Whitehead in 1868, a number of years before a practical submarine was developed.

While I was on one of my boats, we fired some missles. The boat earned the Meritorious Unit Commendation.

My research has told me that this is a ribbon only award; there is no medal for it. Is that correct?

Also, I see on the web people selling MUC pennants. Does the Navy issue such pennants to ships awarded the MUC?

Thanks

you are correct about the MUC being a ribbon only  and I seem to recall Aspro had a ribbon for its MUC and the Picture of Parche Sail seemed to have more than just the PUCs on it but I will look in a bit I think it is in my Flickr group

The MUC is a ribbon award only. When you are wearing dress canvas and medals the ribbon only awards are worn on the right side of the uniform other wise they are worn in order of precedence on the ribbon bars under your dolphins.

My ribbon bars. Most have more, many have less.
Just depended on where you were and what happened while you were there and how long you were active.

So, I ended up with a MUC, a "they didn't catch me", a gedunk and a "I can't tell where we were or what we were doing"

Yes, all Unit Citations and Commendations have a corresponding Pennant for the ship to fly.

On all the boats I rode, there was a small flagstaff attached to the back of the sail inport, where the Commissioning Pennant and the Unit Citation Pennants flew. We may also have flown the Squadron Commander's pennant there when he was onboard. Don't recall if that flagstaff moved to the bridge underway.
