A gentleman I had great respect for...made a reply to me "that's life, Dex". No John, that's not life...at least not Life as taught at my dinner table. Life should have higher standards than you are apparently willing to accept. Life should come with levels of respect and decency....Among men, the concept of reciprocal respect and consideration is the standard that elevates decency. To accept your standard would be to cheapen the par value of decency and lower the ideal. That is a set of personal values some folks are willing to forgo. Not me. Here's how it works...John Bay posts what he feels is tribute to his Mother and her idiot son....Dex Armstrong out of respect for John Bay would not soil that post with a load of crap about being happy some sonuvabitch died in prison. It's called RESPECT and DECENCY...a concept alien to you, but part of LIFE to good folks. That John...is life. Thanks for the wisdom of your observation. I expected better. DEX

Give it a rest, Dex. I thought this was a submarine discussion board, not a eulogy page.

Dex:

I don't think his comments in any way lessened your tribute to your Mother. And if you gave him a place to safely vent some of his bitterness over the way his father passed, that could be a good thing.

This whole discussion is particularly pertinent to me, because I lost my father last Veterans' Day, of complications following surgery for a broken leg, and my mother passed less than two weeks ago, due to colon cancer and COPD. Both lived long, full lives, and had 54 years together. Now, after 5 months (to the day) apart, they are together again, in a place where there is no pain or infirmity.

I half-jokingly call myself "The Infernal Optimist". Sometimes I have to work really hard at it, but if I didn't keep a positive attititude, I'd go stark raving mad.

Stay well, Shipmate. And try to accentuate the positive. Life is more fun that way.

John Bay did not post anything about anyone dying. That is Dex's whatever. His panties are in a knot over something, and he has blasted others off list for the same "offenses". Take it for what it is worth.

Since this is not a eulogy page, should I stop posting the obits so I won't offend anyone?

I would certainly hope not. your obits are Subvets, and are definitly submarine related. In addition, there is a distinct difference between an Obituary and an Eulogy.

Thank you for your service to us all!

In what may be only a curious coincidence, or maybe something more profound, Sue McLaughlin passed me the attached story. I'm sure I already had it saved to disc somewhere, but to have it resurface at this time....

Something to think about.

=================

STONE

TWO FRIENDS WERE WALKING THROUGH THE DESERT.
DURING SOME POINT OF THE JOURNEY, THEY HAD AN ARGUMENT;
AND ONE FRIEND SLAPPED THE OTHER ONE IN THE FACE.

THE ONE WHO GOT SLAPPED WAS HURT,
BUT WITHOUT SAYING ANYTHING, WROTE IN THE SAND,
“TODAY MY BEST FRIEND SLAPPED ME IN THE FACE”.

THEY KEPT ON WALKING UNTIL THEY FOUND AN OASIS,
WHERE THEY DECIDED TO TAKE A BATH.

THE ONE WHO HAD BEEN SLAPPED GOT STUCK IN THE MIRE,
AND STARTED DROWNING, BUT THE FRIEND SAVED HIM.

AFTER HE RECOVERED FROM THE NEAR DROWNING,
HE WROTE ON A STONE:
'TODAY MY BEST FRIEND SAVED MY LIFE'

THE FRIEND WHO HAD SLAPPED AND SAVED HIS BEST FRIEND
ASKED HIM, 'AFTER I HURT YOU, YOU WROTE IN THE SAND,
AND NOW, YOU WRITE ON A STONE, WHY?'

THE FRIEND REPLIED
'WHEN SOMEONE HURTS US WE SHOULD WRITE IT DOWN IN SAND,
WHERE WINDS OF FORGIVENESS CAN ERASE IT AWAY.

BUT, WHEN SOMEONE DOES SOMETHING GOOD FOR US,
WE MUST ENGRAVE IT IN STONE,
WHERE NO WIND CAN EVER ERASE IT'

LEARN TO WRITE YOUR HURTS IN THE SAND,
AND TO CARVE YOUR BENEFITS IN STONE.

THEY SAY IT TAKES A MINUTE TO FIND A SPECIAL PERSON,
AN HOUR TO APPRECIATE THEM,
A DAY TO LOVE THEM,
BUT THEN,
AN ENTIRE LIFE TO FORGET THEM.

SEND THIS TO THE PEOPLE YOU'LL NEVER FORGET.

I JUST DID.

IF YOU DON'T SEND IT TO ANYONE,
IT MEANS YOU'RE IN A HURRY,
AND THAT YOU'VE FORGOTTEN YOUR FRIENDS.

TAKE THE TIME TO LIVE!

DO NOT VALUE THE THINGS YOU HAVE IN YOUR LIFE,
BUT VALUE WHO YOU HAVE IN YOUR LIFE!

AND IF I HAPPEN TO GET IT BACK,
THEN I KNOW MY PLACE IN YOUR LIFE

'Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.'

Very Good, Don, and thanks to Sue for sending it. Sure would be great to see her show up now and again, but, we all can understand why she doesn't. Gary is missed here on these pages a lot.
