At random: The United States submarine USS TRITON was fitted with twin reactors and was considered the longest submarine ever built until the advent of the OHIO class. The TRITON was designed for a surface displacement of 5,900 tons. Large submarines of other countries have been the Japanese I-400 (5,220 tons), and the French SURCOUF (2,880 tons).

FOSTER William L. “Beau”, CAPT, USN, Ret., 85, passed away Monday, 14 April, 2008. He was born 20 May, 1922 in Robstown, Texas. After graduating from high school he left the family farm and enlisted in the Navy. After two years on the Battleship Tennessee, he received an appointment to the United States Naval Academy and graduated with the class of 1947. "Beau" then began an exceptional Naval career which spanned 29 years, 3 submarine commands, a submarine squadron command, the command of an oiler off Viet Nam and a final tour of duty as the Chief of Staff at the Naval Academy. Early in his career he met the love of his life, the late Joni Foster, and despite spending 19 years at sea was the proud father of four loving children. His three sons graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1970, 1972 and 1974. His loving daughter Lee, has always been the apple of his eye. After retiring in 1973 "Beau" settled in Lexington, Virginia. When "Joni" passed away in 1999 he once again returned to his roots and moved back to Texas. Then, in 2006 he moved to Jacksonville, Florida to be near two of his children. In Jacksonville, as he has throughout his life, he enchanted all he met with good humor and fascinating stories. He is survived by his four loving children ,sons Kim, Tom, Rick and his loving daughter, Lee and ten grandchildren and one great grandchild. He also has one sister, Betty and a brother Mac living in Texas. Funeral services will be conducted at the United States Naval Academy, Monday, 23 June, at 1:00 p.m. Dad, we all love you and will miss you, but we know you're in a better place with no pain and with Mom. HANSEN, Christian L., CDR, USN, Ret., 75, of Fredericksburg, passed away on Friday, April 18, 2008 at Mary Washington Hospital. He was the husband of Betty D. Hansen. Chris enlisted in the United States Navy in 1952 serving aboard the aircraft carrier USS Hornet (CVA-12), and diesel submarine USS. Sennet (SS-408), during the Korean War. In 1956, Chris left the Navy to obtain a BS degree in Industrial Technology from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. Chris re-entered the Navy in 1962 as an Aviation Officer Candidate. Serving in the Vietnam War, he logged over 3800 flight hours as a navigator for both transport and tactical missions. After leaving active duty in 1970, Chris continued in the Naval Reserves until retiring at the rank of Commander in 1984. Commander Hansen's awards and decorations include the Navy Good Conduct Medal, Navy Occupation Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal (2), Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, and the Armed Forces Reserve Medal. Along with his wife Betty, Chris is survived by his children, Denise Anne Price and her husband, John, Douglas Allen Hansen and his wife, Dawn, Dean Andrew Hansen, Darryl Adam Hansen, and his wife, Mary, Michael Troy Dawson and his wife, Kathryn, and James Todd Dawson and his wife, Allison; his sister, Laura Marie McConnell and her husband, Bill; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The family will receive friends on Monday, April 28, 2008 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 29, 2008, 12 noon at Ferry Farm Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Quantico National Cemetery. Honors will be provided by the U.S. Navy Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Families of the Wounded Fund, Inc., c/o Village Bank, P.O. LOWTHERT, III, William H., 59, died Friday April 25, 2008 at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville. He had lived at 34 Willow Lane, Carroll Park, Bloomsburg for the past 30 years. Bill was born September 9, 1948, in Pottsville, and was the son of Jane (Burke) Lowthert, Bensalem, and the late William H. Lowthert Jr. He was a graduate of Saint Clair Area High School. He received his BS in Technology Management from the University of Maryland in 1978, his MS degree in Vocational Industrial Education in 1984 from Pennsylvania State University, and his Ph.D. in Workforce Education and Development in 1996 from Pennsylvania State University. Bill was employed for 30 years at PPL and most recently as Leadership/Culture Development Manager. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy from 1968-1974. While serving in the Navy, he was a Submarine Reactor Operator, Nuclear Prototype Instructor, Electronics Technician, Training Coordinator and Discrepancy Coordinator. He was a member of First English Baptist Church, Bloomsburg, where he previously served as Lay Moderator, a member of the Board of Trustees and a choir member. He completed course work with the Church Leadership Institute of the American Baptist Churches of Pennsylvania and Delaware. He was also an adjunct professor in the Management Department at Bloomsburg University. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Thelma (Gorman), who he married Oct. 17, 1970; three children, William and wife, Jamie, Montoursville, Brian and wife, Cora, Lititz, and Rebecca, Harrisburg; three grandchildren, Will, Erin and Christa; a brother, Robert Lowthert and wife, Brenda, Palmyra, and a sister, Peggy Dooling and husband, Larry, Bensalem. A Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, May 3 at 2 p.m. at the First English Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Lee Barnhardt officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Memorial Fund, First English Baptist Church, 700 Millville Road, Bloomsburg, PA 17815. The family is being assisted by the Allen Funeral Home, 745 Market at Eighth St., Bloomsburg.


McCONNELL, Bob, 72, "Policeman and Nice Guy" died April 18, 2008. He was born June 26, 1935. Bob served in the U.S. Navy, earning his Dolphins as a Submariner. In 1956 he began his career as a police officer for Tacoma, Washington. He married his wife Jodi in 1967. From 1968 to 1969 he attended the Law Enforcement Management Course, wrote the grant for, and directed, the S.T.E.P. project for the City of Tacoma. In 1971 Bob and Jodi's son Joel was born. In 1983 Bob retired from police work and started a 14-year career as the co-owner of B&J Catering with Jodi. It was a natural extension of their love for cooking and entertaining. To share in their love for cooking they also taught gourmet cooking classes for 4 years at TCC. Preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Verna McConnell, and his sister Luella Edensword. He also leaves to mourn his 2 grandchildren, Maxwell and Claire McConnell, and a large number of family and friends that he loved very much. A vigil will be held May 1st at 7PM. The funeral will be held May 2, 2008 at 12:10PM. Both will be held at St. Leo's Church, located at 710 South 13th Street, Tacoma. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to St. Leo's Neighborhood Clinic or L'arche Tahoma Hope.

Chris Hansen served on USS Sennet SS-408 as a EM2(SS) during the years 1954-1956.

Shipmate Lowthert began working for PPL in 1978 -- Three Mile Island incident happened a year later....  What a start to a career.  See his website here: http://www.alwaysimproving.com/ -- deals with human performance and technology management.  I think TMI needed Lowthert long before 1979....
