LECHNER, Gordon Lyle, YNC(SS), USN, Ret., 78 - of Egg Harbor Township, NJ, passed away on April 28, 2008. Born and lived in Crystal, MI until 18 years old when he enlisted in the US Navy where he served with distinction for over 22 years in the Submarine Service and the Pacific Fleet Intelligence Service until his retirement in 1970. After his retirement he was an Assistant Manager of Ginos, Roy Rogers, KFC. He was the original Base Commander of the South Jersey Submarine Vets. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 2189 in Somers Point and a member of the Fleet Reserve Association. He had an income tax preparation service in Egg Harbor Township for 30 years. In his leisure time, Gordon enjoyed antiques, fishing, coin collecting, and model trains, airplanes, and cars. He was predeceased by his parents Clayton & Elva Lechner, his brother Kermit LaForest, and daughter Cheryl Layton Swayne. He is survived by his wife of 57 years Grace T. (Carr); son Gary L. Lechner (Nathalie); daughter Debbie L. Rockelmann (Rich); nine grandchildren: Heath, Bob, Nick, Kayla, Gary, Christopher, Julian, Rich, and Viktoria; four great-grandchildren: Avigayile, Kira, Austin, and Nick; his sister Patricia Hale of Lima, OH; exchange student grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends who will miss him dearly. A viewing will be held on Friday evening 6-7:30 PM, at the Boakes Funeral Home, 6050 Main St., Mays Landing, where services will be held at 7:30 PM. MURDOCK, Jr., Paul B., 84, died Sunday, April 27, 2008, at his home in Woodstock, IL. He was born March 9, 1924, in Chicago, to Paul B. Murdock Sr. and Cora (Gulbranson) Murdock. He married Alice M. Pierson on Oct. 19, 1946, at Irving Park Lutheran Church in Chicago. He served on the USS Hawkbill SS-366 during World War II. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5040, Loyal Order of the Moose, Elks, American Legion, and the US Submarine Veterans of World War II. He also was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Woodstock. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, ship modeling and golfing. He was employed by Illinois Bell and AT&T for 39 years and retired as a transmission engineer in 1983. He is survived by his wife, Alice, who was the love of his life; two sons, David and Kevin; his grandchildren, Roger A. Finnie Jr., Shannon Chapman, Peter Finnie, Jennine Bourge, Diana Murdock, David Murdock, Sarah Murdock, Amy Murdock and Erik Murdock; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Charles Murdock; two sisters, Janet Slaminski and Edna Murdock; a son, Paul B. Murdock III; and a daughter, Darlene A. Finnie. There will be a memorial gathering from 10 a.m. until the memorial service at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 3, at Grace Lutheran Church. ROADWAY, Sr., William E. Roadway, 80, of Norwich, CT, died on Monday, April 28, 2008 at the William W. Backus Hospital. Born on September 21, 1927 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Albert and Ethel (Imph) Roadway. William was a veteran of World War II having served with the United States Navy submarine service on the USS Quillback (SS-424). He served from June 25, 1945 until Sept. 21, 1948 and was awarded the World War II Victory Medal and the American Theatre Ribbon. While stationed at the Submarine Base in Groton he met Teresa A. Graley. They were married on Aug. 31, 1946 at The Cathedral of St. Patrick in Norwich. After his honorable discharge from the Navy he returned to Connecticut and began his career at Electric Boat in Groton where he retired as a General Foreman from the Specialist Department. He also worked part-time as a driver at D'Elia's Bakery in Norwich for the past ten years. William was a devoted husband and father. He enjoyed sports and loved spending time outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed playing the harmonica and guitar and liked to sing. William loved animals and loved his dog Skippy-Doo Bear. He is survived by his loving wife, Teresa; three children, William E. Roadway, Jr., Jacqueline Ossowski and Kelly Roadway-Hajduk all of Norwich; three grandchildren, Joyleene Roadway, Albert Lawrence Roadway and Jill Roadway Gummoe; and his great-granddaughter, Lilly Ann Gummoe; he was predeceased by his grandson, William Albert Roadway; his brother Harry Roadway; and sister, Elizabeth Spencer Roadway. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary Church. Entombment, with presentation of military honors, will follow in St. Mary Mausoleum. There are no calling hours.
