At random: The United States submarine USS TRITON was fitted with twin reactors and was considered the longest submarine ever built until the advent of the OHIO class. The TRITON was designed for a surface displacement of 5,900 tons. Large submarines of other countries have been the Japanese I-400 (5,220 tons), and the French SURCOUF (2,880 tons).

Subject: At Sea

There is little in this world that is more inspiriring than standing on the bridge of a submarine cruising the ocean. After years of civilian life you sometime forget the majesty of the sea. The smell of the sea air and the feel of salt spray on your face celebrates your life. You are one of the few souls on earth that have experienced the wonders of being a sailor who served his country on a black metal shark of the deep.

Make that o'er ... as in:

O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?

Flapper, you must understand that Steamboat hails from the Southern end of the Shenandoah Valley. Folks there do talk a tad different than in other areas of this great land. Know what I mean Vern?

Thanks RCK. Why is it that the older I get the more I miss those smells and feelings? I suppose it's because as a young man I fell deeply in love with the sea, and I miss her.

Man at sea, with cigar

About 0 dark thirty tomorrow I'll get a good thermos of coffee, light up a stogie, and put to sea in this little beauty.  Spend two or three nights onboard.  Hit a nice beach off Cedar Key for an afternoon nap.  Drop in on a shoreside restaurant.  Watch stars.  Porpoises.  Maybe a manatee?  Ah, the flung spray and the blown spume!  WTF are those people doing on shore?

I feel bad for those who cannot get to an ocean beach easily. It's one fo the most, if not the most, comforting things I can do when stress starts to buld up. It's my Prozac and on occasion my Viagra.
