At random: The late Capt. Don Ulmer, USN SS (Ret.), and noted submarine author, began his military career by enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1947 and in 1949 while serving as an electrical technician E-4 aboard the submarine USS Clamagore, he was transferred to the Naval Academy. When he asked his commanding officer why he was being sent to Annapolis, the skipper replied, "I don't think you're smart enough to make E-5 and I need the bunk space." Ulmer graduated in 1954 and in 1967 returned to command Clamagore, possibly the only officer to command a U.S. warship having served on it as an enlisted man.

Met the wife of the wartime CO of the USS BASS. She's a lovely lady and a real tribute to her husband. She paqrked in one of the handicap parking spaces at the Post Office and appeared to be having difficulty with some large packages she intended to mail. I aswked her if she wanted some assistance and while she guarde3d the open car, I made three trips into the Post Office hauling packages. When I finished she thanked me and I told her that I was retired and had nothing but time...I said, "There's nothing between me and the loading dock at the funeral home." . When we finished, she s aw the Dolphins in the rear wcindow of my mini-van. That led to her asking me if I ever actually rode submarines....I told her that indeed I was an oxygen thief on a smokeboat. She told me about her husband and how proud she was that he commanded a combat sub. I took her for coffee at Starbucks...I noted that she drank her coffee black and came packaged with a million dollar smile. We boatsailors sure did a great job picking our wimmin. DEX

Was her husband the CO on August 17, 1942 when the devastating fire asphyxiated 25 enlisted men?
