At random: USS R-6 was fitted the first prototype US submarine snorkel at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in the closing months of the European part of WW II in April / May 1945 and successfully tested it off Fort Lauderdale, Fl. as the war against Japan ended in August 1945. The snorkel was removed from the USS R-6 and she was decommissioned and scrapped in September 1945.

KOHL, Oldrich, 82, passed away May 1, 2008, in Oxnard, CA. Oldrich was born July 16, 1925. He enlisted in the Navy on his 17th birthday during World War II in Portland, Ore. He served 25 years with the Navy on several battle ships including the USS Portland, USS Redfish, USS Medregal and USS Archerfish. He retired on July 15, 1967. He was a very proud veteran and honored to have served on submarines during World War II. Oldrich was preceded in death by his daughter, Janet Caldwell. He is survived by his son-in-law, David Caldwell; grandsons, Lee and Ryan Caldwell; granddaughters, Kristin and Carley Caldwell; and great-granddaughters, McKayla and MacKenzie Caldwell. A service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 19 at Forest Lawn, Hollywood Hills, 6300 Forest Lawn Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90068.


MURNANE, Arthur F., 82, passed away peacefully May 8, 2008 at his home surrounded by family. Veteran of the U.S. Navy Submarine Service in WWII. Retired from Genesco after a 44 year career. Survived by wife of 60 years Marian Murnane; son Arthur (Kathleen) Murnane; daughter Janet (Ken) Gaynor; son Brian (Tara) Murnane; grandchildren, Kevin (Leah) Murnane, Meghan (Matt) Quinn, Grace Murnane; brothers Edmund and Robert Murnane; sisters Rita Buckhorn, Marilyn Concannon and Anne O'Leary. Visitation will be held Sunday, May 11, 2008 from 4-8 p.m. at Crawford Funeral Home. Funeral mass Monday, May 12, 2008 at St. Ignatius of Antioch at 10:30 a.m. followed by burial at Calvary Cemetery.
