At random: "Without courage, you might as well not be in it. You’ve got to have courage--moral courage, physical courage--and honor. Honor means telling the truth even when it might not be to your advantage" Retired Capt. Charles W. Rush Jr. (85), Navy Cross recipient, when asked to give advice to Chiefs and Junior Officers in today's submarine service.

Did anybody watch divers go down on the Oriskiny that was sunk 22 miles off Pensecola's coast. It was, at the time of filming down just about 1 year. The ship had very little growth on it, or silt on the decks. The show is the Quest for Sunken Warships. What is really neat about the show is it intersperse's with old film, showing the history of the ship and the wars she fought.

They showed the fatal fire she had, when in a panic, a crewman, instead of throwing a flare that had gone off over the side, he pitched it into a locker that was filled with flares. 44 airdales died, of which
about 22 were pilots.

Coincidently, the CO asked for volunteer pilots from  throughout the Navy and one of them was John McCAin, who was only on Oriskiny about 3 weeks before being shot down. This from him in an interview with a French new team while in the Hanoi Hilton recovering from broken bones....

Even more co incidental was McCain was availiable because he was waiting to return to his squadron after being injured during the Forrestal fire. He was in the plane there with full load of bombs and fuel that was hit by the missile from the Phantom. This missisle ignited the fuel tank of McCains plane and he had to climb out of it and off the plane by hanging on the refueling probe on the nose of his A-4. His injuries were severe enough for him to go home but he declined and before Forrestal could repair and and McCain could return to his squadron the Oriskany Fire occured.

That was on the military channel friday night along with two other segments of wreck divers, the first was a dive in Truk Lagoon and the final one they dove off of North Carolina and ended up diving on TWO U-Boats.

They also shot scenes on the Big "O" for "The Bridges at Toko-Ri." The scenes in Japanese nightclubs
had lots of "O" crewmen as extras.....Smile everytime I see it.....one was an IC2 on carrier, he married my cousin.
The fire on the Oriskany was up forward (I think) the men in the JO bunkroom all died....
plus others as well....I remember that JO bunkroom, stayed there when I TDYed to carrier to help with ORI
when she was going through Pearl Harbor in early 1960's.......... Talk about deja vu........
