BALYA, Sr., William C., 84, passed away Friday, May 9, 2008 in Melbourne, FL. Bill was a retired Superintendent of Ride and Show Manufacturing at Disney World. He moved here in 1961 from East Conemaugh, PA and was a member of the Ascension Catholic Church, a veteran of the US Navy Submarine Service in World War II, .VFW Post 4206 and American Legion Post # 163 in Melbourne an avid golfer and member of the Melbourne Mens Golf Association. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Lottie (nee Motak); daughter, Patricia (Bill) Glessner; son, William Jr.; grandsons, Brett (Becky) and Craig Wilmotte; great-grandson, Ryan; and sister, Alice Walker. Calling hours and wake service will be Wednesday, May 14th from 5-8 p.m. at Brownlie- Maxwell Funeral Home in Mel bourne. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, May 15th at 10 a.m. at Ascension Catholic Church in Melbourne. GELETKA, Michael C., 87, of Sanford Road, Wells, ME died Saturday, May 10, 2008 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough following a long battle with cancer. Michael was born January 8, 1921 in Cleveland, Ohio a son of John and Mary (Matis) Geletka. He joined the United States Navy in 1937 serving on submarines during WW II and the remainder of his 21 years in the Navy. On July 20, 1940 he married his sweetheart, Phyllis Montgomery. After retiring from the Navy in 1957, he earned his degree at Boston University. He became a Snap-On Tool Dealer for 20 years before retiring for the second time. Michael was a member and busy with the Ocean Lodge of Masons, Scottish Rites, and Kora Shrine. He was the Memorabilia Director for the US Submarine Veterans, WW II and attended the International Submarine Association Conventions. He also enjoyed hunting and cutting and stacking firewood. Michael was predeceased by his brother and two sisters. He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 68 years, Phyllis; son, Richard C. Geletka and his wife Gayle of Wells, his daughter, Charlotte Lee Brown and her husband Michael of Norcross, Ga; four grandchildren, R. Kurtiss, Kara Lee, Timothy, and Abbey; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 13 from 6-8 p.m. at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Road, Wells. A Masonic Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. in Michael's honor. McDOWELL Joseph Matthew, CAPT, USN, Ret., 92, passed away in Alexandria, VA on February 25, 2008. Captain McDowell was born in Manchester, NH, the oldest child of Joseph Curry and Marion McLeod McDowell. He graduated from Columbia Preparatory School in Washington, D.C. before being appointed to the Naval Academy as a member of the class of 1938. Upon graduation, he served aboard the USS West Virginia and then the USS Marblehead. In 1941 he graduated from Submarine School in New London and spent World War II in the Submarine Force, on combat patrols on the Pogy, the Pipefish and the Carp. Shortly after VJ Day, while commanding the submarine base at Yokosuka, Joe was selected as Captain of the US Navy crew that manned the captured I-400 (the world’s largest submarine, designed and built in secret to carry aircraft to bomb the Panama Canal) for transit across the Pacific. Upon his return to the states in 1946, while he was on duty at Great Lakes, IL, he married his wife, Diantha. He then served on staff of Com6thFleet in the Mediterranean followed by assignment in the Office of Naval Intelligence in Washington D.C. With the outbreak of hostilities in Korea, Joe assumed command of the USS Taussig which saw major action during the Korean conflict from 1951-1953. McDowell then returned to the Naval Academy, as the Department of Ordnance & Gunnery Executive Officer, followed by return to sea as Commander Escort Squadron 12, Destroyer Force, Atlantic. In 1957, Joe became Commanding Officer of the Navy and Marine Corps ROTC at Marquette University. In 1960 he returned to sea to command the USS Caloosahatchee, homeported in Newport, Rhode Island. Duty as the senior line officer at the US Naval Research Laboratory in Washington was followed by assignment to OpNav. His final command was a special one for him, Superintendent of the U.S. Naval Observatory in Washington D.C. After retiring from the Navy in June, 1968, Captain McDowell remained in Virginia where he pursued a successful career in real estate. His beloved wife, Diantha passed away in 1991.Captain McDowell is survived by his two daughters, Melissa M. Stevens and Deborah M. Gilronan; his brother, RADM Charles E. McDowell, JAGC, USN (Ret) and six grandchildren. A service celebrating Captain McDowell‘s life will be held at 9 a.m. on May 22, 2008 at the Old Post Chapel, Fort Myer, Arlington, VA, followed by interment with Full Military Honors at Arlington National Cemetery. Memorial contributions honoring Captain McDowell may be made to the US Naval Academy Foundation, Chapel Organ Fund #9314, Attn: Melanie Wahl,Beach Hall - 291, 291 Wood Rd,, Annapolis, MD 21402. A service celebrating Captain McDowell‘s life will be held at 9 a.m. on May 22, 2008 at the Old Post Chapel, Fort Myer, Arlington, VA, followed by interment with Full Military Honors at Arlington National Cemetery.
