GARRELTS, Larry H., 69, of Reno, NV, died May 10, 2008, at Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno. He was born April 7, 1939, in McPherson, KA., to Lynn and Mary Garrelts. He graduated in 1957 from high school in Ellsworth, Kan., and received a master's degree from Eastern Oregon State College. He spent 22 years in the U.S. Navy's submarine service and retired in 1979. Survivors include his wife, Carol; his sons, Cris Garrelts of Clearfield, Utah, and Timothy Garrelts of Idaho Falls; sister, Kathy Lazio of Platt, Mo.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, May 16, at the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Fernley, Nev. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to the Veterans Guest House, 880 Locust St., Reno, NV 89502.


GODFREY, Thomas 'Tom' J., 68, of Superior, formerly of West Duluth, died Sunday May 11, 2008 in St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth. He was born in Duluth to William and Clara Godfrey on March 19, 1940. He had attended St. James School and had graduated from Denfeld High School. Tom enlisted in the U.S. Navy in December of 1959. He received indoctrination and technical training at Naval Training Center, San Diego, Calif., attended naval Submarine School in New London, Conn., and was subsequently assigned to USS Becuna (SS 319). Lieutenant Commander Godfrey graduated from Nuclear Power School and served as Nuclear Engineering Plant Instructor at the General Electric Training Unit in Schenectady, N.Y. In January 1966 he was assigned to the Submarine USS M.G. Vallejo (SSBN 658). He then returned to the General Electric Training Unit to become the Leading Nuclear Propulsion Plant Instructor. In July 1970 Lieutenant Commander Godfrey reported to the USS L.Y. Spear (AS 36). Following a three year tour as Quality Assurance Officer, and Radiological Officer he was assigned to Norfolk Naval Shipyard as Nuclear Submarine Repair Officer. In April 1976 he reported to the Submarine Tender USS Proteus (AS 19) in Guam, for duty as Production Officer and Assistant Repair Officer. He served as Nuclear Ship Superintendent at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Wash., for USS Long Beach (CGN) and in May 1979 he was assigned to Commander Submarine Squadron Eighteen in Charleston, S.C. as Extended Refit Program Superintendent. Lieutenant Commander Godfrey served as Executive Officer of Naval Submarine Base San Diego through December of 1982 and assumed command of Naval Reserve Center Duluth in January 1983. He served as Lieutenant Commander of the Submarine Warfare School in Bange, Wash., from 1985-1990. Lieutenant Commander Godfrey's qualifications include: Submarine Warfare Officer; Surface Warfare Officer; and Nuclear Propulsion Plant Operator. He is entitled to wear the navy Commendation Medal (three awards); Navy Achievement Medal (two awards); Good Conduct Medal; Humanitarian Service Medal and the National Defense Medal in addition to other service decorations. He had married Claudia Jacobs in 1994. Thomas was a member of Holy Assumption Catholic Church, the West End VFW, and West Duluth American Legion, the Academy of Model Aeronautics, and was currently the President of the Duluth/Superior Radio Control Club. He had also achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. Tom was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Annette in 1990; son, Richard in 1995; sisters, Katherine Godfrey in 2006, Carol Ann Godfrey in 1976, infant sisters Mary in 1941, Margarite in 1942, and Alice in 1946. Tom is survived by his wife, Claudia; daughter, Debra Godfrey of Wildwood, Ga.; brother, Michael Godfrey of Duluth; sisters, Mary Ann (Gordy) Allar of Garden Ridge, Texas, Joanne (Timothy) Carroll of Duluth, Peggy Overbie of Sadona, Ariz., Alice (Daryle Warner) Thompson of Saginaw, and Julie Godfrey of Duluth; mother-in-law, Bernice Jacobs of Duluth; many nieces, nephews and cousins, and his beloved dog Ben. VISITATION:5 to 7 p.m. Friday with a 6:30 p.m. Rosary Recitation in Hegstrom Family Funeral Homes, Foley Chapel. Visitation continues on Saturday from 1 p.m until the 2 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial in St. James Catholic Church. Burial will be at Oneota Cemetery. Military Honors will be Accorded by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the Boy Scouts of America. JOHNSON, Marvin John, 87, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, May 4, 2008. Born near Osakis, Minnesota, he became a submariner in the US Navy during WWII in the Pacific Theatre from 1942 to 1948. While the submarine was undergoing repairs in San Francisco, he met and eventually married Alice Helen Stephenson, a nurse cadet, who had been raised in Rio Dell. He and Alice moved to Rio Dell in 1972, where they built a home. He was Head Custodian at Rio Dell Elementary School for many years. He loved woodworking and built many things over the years. He loved studying the Bible and sharing it with others. Following his discharge from the U.S. Navy, he and Alice went to Multnomah School of the Bible as well as Western Theological Seminary in Portland, Oregon. He spent many years pastoring at the Westhaven Community Church and Fieldbrook Community Church, and he was interim pastor to various local churches, including Bridgeville Community Church, Sequoia Bible Church, and the Laytonville Baptist Church. He even drove as far as Hoopa to fill in for ministers. He also served as Chairman of the Board for the Eureka Rescue Mission and Child Evangelism. He is preceded in death by his parents, Thorvald and Olga Johnson; and his devoted wife of 57 years, Alice Helen Stephenson Johnson. He is survived by sisters, Lillian Martin and Evelyn Faust; children, Philip (Sandra) Johnson, Ruth Johnson-Fraser, Melody (Ed) Moe, Naomi (Steve) Johnson; 12 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Friday May 16th at 1 o’clock at the Rio Dell Baptist Church. Family requests any donations be given to either the Navigators or the Eureka Rescue Mission. KUECHLER, Henry R., 79, Sandown, NH, died Sunday, May 11, 2008 at the Community Hospice House in Merrimack, NH, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on January 25, 1929, in Medford, MA, he was the son of the late Henry R. & Pearl (Carver) Kuechler. Henry grew up in New Jersey and was educated there. On his 17th birthday, January 25, 1946, he joined the US Navy. Henry served the country during WWII, the Korean and Vietnam Wars and the Cold War. He served on various ships and in many countries. During his time in the service Henry also completed Submarine School in 1954, and from 1963 -1966 he was an Naval ROTC Instructor at Harvard University in Cambridge. Henry retired from the Navy in November of 1968 with the rank of Chief Petty Officer, Gunners Mate. Following his retirement from the Navy, Henry went into the oil burner service profession and worked for Preferred Utilities Company for many years. He retired from the Burlington School System, Burlington High School, as a HVAC Engineer in the late 1980's. Henry resided with his family in Tewksbury from 1969 until 2005, when he moved to Sandown, NH. In his spare time, Henry loved to spend time with his family, especially his grandchildren, he was a devoted Patriots Fan and a BIG Red Sox Fan and never missed a game. Henry was an avid coin collector as well as other collectibles. He will be missed by his family, extended family and many friends. Henry was the devoted husband of 53 years of the late Rose Marie (Fennell) Kuecheler, who passed in 2005. He was the devoted father of Bobby & Cathy Kuechler of Chester, NH, loving grandfather of Christian & Matthew Kuechler and Danielle McManus, brother of the late Dolores Reynolds, and is also survived by many nieces & nephews in New Jersey and Massachusetts. Kuechler Henry R., 79, of Sandown, NH, formerly of Tewksbury, May 11, 2008. Beloved husband of the late Rose Marie (Fennell) Kuechler. His Funeral will be held from the Nichols Funeral Home, Inc.,187 Middlesex Ave., (Rte. 62), Wilmington, on Friday, May 16th at 9 am followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Dorothy's Church, Main St., Wilmington, at 10 am. Interment St. Mary's Cemetery, Tewksbury. Visiting hours on Thursday, May 15th from 2-4 & 6-8 pm. WATKINS, Thomas Jefferson "T.J.", 47, and his wife Cindy Trott Watkins, 44, both of St. Marys, Ga., died May 5, 2008. A memorial service was held on May 9, 2008, at Kingsland First Baptist Church with the Rev. Tony Barber officiating. T.J. served 20 years in the U.S. Navy submarine service and retired as a nuclear framed chief machinist's mate in 2002. For the past four years, T.J. was employed as the assistant quality assurance officer at Naval Submarine Support Center, Kings Bay, Ga. Cindy, formerly of Belgrade, was a homemaker. They were wed in 1982 in Maysville and were members of Five Points Baptist Church. Survivors include daughter, Jennifer Michelle Watkins Redding of St. Marys, Ga.; son, Tye Christopher Watkins of St. Marys. Ga.; her sisters, Dawn Jenkins of Belgrade; her brother, Eli Alton Trott Jr. of Elon; her mother, Elizabeth M. "Betty Rose" Trott of Jacksonville; his sisters, Connie Barnes of Moyok, Lynn Cartwright of Hertford, Debbie Newby, Joanna Holladay VanDewater and Amy Brink Brillinger; his brother, Patrick J. Hollady of Seneca, S.C.; his parents, Melvin Donald and Mildred Joanne Watkins of Elizabeth City. The family received friends May 8, 2008 at Kingsland First Baptist Church. Memorials may be sent to Central Missionary Clearinghouse, P.O. Box 219228, Houston, Texas 77218-9228.
