Great Sage of the Sea Posts: 781 Location: Port Orchard WA | Subject: DSV-1 and Sea Quest for John Are the Deep Subs on loan to the Museum or does the Museum own them? Reason I am asking is I stopped by yesterday (was up interviewing for a job in Silverdale and getting a base sticker, forgot you were closed on Tuesday) anyways the Trieste and the Deep Quest both look like they could use a bath and I was wondering is it would take and act of Congress to organize a work party and a couple pressure washers to clean them up? They have a good coating of the winter algae we get here. Just a question South Sound Base is always looking for something like that as well as the PO Sea Scouts and the NJROTC at Stadium in Tacoma. My business might just spring for a tailgate as well, like we do for the BBall Game, which CinCHouse is willing to consider doing this year again (after taking a break last year) (deepquest.jpg) (trieste.jpg) Attachments ---------------- deepquest.jpg (40KB - 727 downloads) trieste.jpg (50KB - 796 downloads)

Master and Commander Posts: 2191 Location: Port Ludlow, WA (the Olympic Penninsula) | Subject: RE: DSV-1 and Sea Quest for John The Naval Undersea Museum Exhibits Director, Ron Roehmholdt, is well aware of the unsightliness of the two (and actually the Sturgeon sail also, but it is dark and hids the crud better). The problem lies with the Navy, the work HAS to be done by contract - I already volunteered last year if needed but we wouldn't be able to get past the Navy "burro-crats". The museum does "own" all those things, since the Navy owns the museum - also and the land that it sits on. The museum is run by a combination of Navy funds and a foundation that was set up in years past. Not a great answer "but" it is a good Navy answer - LOL...

Great Sage of the Sea Posts: 566 Location: Inyokern, Ca. | Subject: RE: DSV-1 and Sea Quest for John We used to take care of problems like this on the mid-watch in-port... What days are the Museum closed? Sorry Sir, I don't know what happened, I was performing my PM's on the washer and left it sitting there while I took a smoke break. It appears it accidently failed open and washed about half of the thing on its own. I couldn't leave it half-done so I finished up the rest of it... No sir, won't happen again. BB

Great Sage of the Sea Posts: 781 Location: Port Orchard WA | Subject: RE: DSV-1 and Sea Quest for John thanks John I figured as much and I did see the sail and the Sea Lab Hatch as well. I wonder if their isn't some other way to get the okay maybe Base CO, since the are Navy owned. Anyways I thought I would ask. I could ask my son (he is a Fire Captain in the ship yard) maybe they could declare them to be on fire and use the different engines to put them out. or maybe use the parking lot some Tuesday for just training or competition. Thanks Again I just thought it might make for a helluva an outting for all the SubVets to participate and help save a few bucks, Just like Crusader in NAD Park lots of people want to take care of it and it is hopelessly mired in Red tape. I will probably be out their nest Weds if I don't get to go on Mon

There are contracts out to bid on the outdoor artifacts. I wish it was as simple as taking a pressure washer to it, but there would be nothing left of the artifact. The company builds scaffolding around the structure to meet OSHA code (there are a lot of contaminates we want to contain). Archival, non-abrasive, non-corrosive products are used to remove paint, inhibit the rusty areas, barrier sealer is applied, paint (again archival brand), and another barrier. The structures are also reviewed for structural safety by a structural engineer.
