For those subvets and friends and family who will be in the San Francisco area on Memorial Day 26 May, PAMPANITO and SVWWII are hosting the Lost Boat Ceremony at 1700 on Pier 45 paying respect to our WWII brothers, their 52 lost boats, and 3,505 shipmates on Eternal Patrol. Local SVWWII brothers will conduct the ceremonies.

Captain Shep Jenks, USN (Retired) will be the keynote speaker. Captain Jenks was the navigator aboard USS NAUTILUS SSN-571 during her historic under-ice journey to the North Pole 50 years ago -- in 1958.

Details at www.maritime.org - go to the LOST BOAT button on the main webpage for info and RSVP contacts.

While you are there, also take time for another look at the recently updated virtual reality tour - click on USS PAMPANITO and then TOUR and enjoy. Thanks again to Rich Pekelney for the latest updates!

Any particular reason it's being done so late in the day? I was planning to make the ceremony again this year but it gets me home late and, as you have seen, I need my beauty sleep, and 0 dark 30 comes earlier than it used to.

CHEW - no amount of beauty sleep will cure what ails you!

Well, we started out selecting 0930 because we want to be good neighbors with the JEREMIAH O'BRIEN who we share Pier 45 with and 1100 gave them some gas. Then we got a lot of feedback that 0930 was too early for those who would come by ferry or drive down from up north.

So we checked and found a "sunset ceremony" was quite popular with some folks. GUMBA gave us some program input that really sold us on the later time. A few local subvet checks told us that was a great idea - especially the Echo Taps and WWII Tolling the Boats parts.

Problem is sunset in San Francisco this time of year is about 1930 or so and everyone agreed that is too late -- so 1700 it is. Fairly straightforward.

Almost 3 weeks after 1700 was locked in, there was some wishing that we would go to Sunday instead, etc - but by then we had contracts for all of the logistics and the speakers lined up - the keynote speaker, Captain Shep Jenks is making a special effort to return for the 1700 ceremony and couldn't get back to the area any earlier.

Hey - we have a docent's bunkroom now, bring your sleeping bag and you can roll against traffic in the AM! See you there - I'll be the one with a red carnation in my lapel

Since I haven't seen your ugly mug in ages, I'll just suck it up and make another memorial day. Anyway, I love the roar and smell of the diesel.
