If a feller was aboard a diesel boat in 1960 and his rating was GSSN, he was an E3 doing what? I've searched and found NO GS rating. Oh, and some navy humor for your help.

Only GS rating was for a Gas Turbine Systems Technician (but for E-9's). but that would not be appl;ied to GSSN - not sure if that helps or not Found in ranks/rates Engineering/Hull category.
But I am sure it is not what your looking for as an answer

GS in 1963 was guided missileman. I was aboard Amberjack in 61 as GSSN.

Thanks, so I'm guessing that a GSSN could have been aboard awaiting orders to another boat that had missiles, cause the Tusk didn't have any.

Back in the '60s guys awaiting nuc school or missile school were sent to the fleet to qualify on diesel boats prior to starting their schools.

I don't know the reasoning behind it unless it was just another winnowing process.

GS was Guied Missleman. We had them on the USS Tunny (SSG-282) in the Early 1950's. The USS Barbero also had them.
