At random: The United States submarine USS TRITON was fitted with twin reactors and was considered the longest submarine ever built until the advent of the OHIO class. The TRITON was designed for a surface displacement of 5,900 tons. Large submarines of other countries have been the Japanese I-400 (5,220 tons), and the French SURCOUF (2,880 tons).

VAN WAGENEN, Albert Miller, III, 77, passed away on Monday May 26, 2008, at his home in Old Lyme, CT after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on October 6, 1930, in Hartford, the son of the late Albert Miller Van Wagenen, II and Alicia Haggerty Van Wagenen. Mr. Van Wagenen grew up in Norwich and graduated from The Taft School and Brown University. He served four years in the US Navy Submarine Service during the Korean War. Mr. Van Wagenen married Janet Marilyn Litke on November 27, 1954, in Scarsdale, NY. He had a business career in the food industry at Nestle as a Vice President/General Manager of the Food Service Products Division, followed by being a Vice President of Development for the Sugar Foods Corporation, marketers of Sweet and Low, and President of its subsidiary, The Original Trenton Cracker Co. Mr. Van Wagenen was a member of the Old Lyme Country Club and Black Hall Club. His hobbies of gardening, hiking, skiing and boating underscored his love of the outdoors. In addition to his wife of 53 years, Mr. Van Wagenen is survived by his five children; a son Mr. Albert Miller Van Wagenen, IV and his wife Christina Skalny Van Wagenen; a daughter Mrs. Pamela Van Wagenen Sweret and her husband Michael Loren Sweret; a daughter Katherine Van Wagenen Sperry and her husband William Rutherford Sperry; a daughter Susan Van Wagenen McIntosh and her husband David Wallace McIntosh and a daughter Elizabeth Van Wagenen Papile and her husband Michael Anthony Papile. Mr. Van Wagenen is also survived by 16 grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday May 30, 2008, at 10 a.m. in The Church of Christ the King, McCurdy Rd., Old Lyme. Burial will be private. Calling hours will be held on Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home, 13 Beckwith La., Old Lyme, CT. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in his memory may be made to Hospice of Southeastern Conn., 227 Dunham St., Norwich, CT 06360.


FECHNER, Thomas V. "Tom", 80, of Longview, WA went to be with his Lord and Saviour on Monday, May 26, 2008, at his home. Tommy was born January 15, 1928, in Oklahoma, to Edward E. Fechner and Agnes Catherine Cox Fechner, formerly of Longview. He attended Longview public school and Allen Military Academy. He married Doris Nell Harris on June 25, 1948, and together, they had celebrated 58 years of marriage. Tommy was in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a Quartermaster First Class aboard the submarine USS Sealion (SS-315). He received the U.S. Navy Cross medal for heroic service. He was a printer by trade and worked for the Longview News-Journal, the Shreveport Times, and the Houston Post. Tommy was a husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who instilled integrity and hard work to his family members. He was always available to help, but he always wanted you to do your best. He was tough, but he was always there for you! Mr. Fechner was preceded in death by his parents, Eddie and Catherine Fechner; his grandmother, Nell Fechner Lillard, who raised him; his wife, Doris Harris Fechner; his brother, Roland Fechner; and one daughter, Teresa Marie "Terri" Fechner. Mr. Fechner is survived by his daughter, Sherri Fechner Morgan and her husband, Keith of Longview; his grandchildren, Shannon and Ben Johnson of Longview, and Jason Morgan of Nacogdoches; and his great-grandchildren, Beaux and Blake Chamberland, and their dad, Jason Chamberland. Tommy is also survived by his brother and sisters in-law, Robert and Marilyn Harris of Karnack, Earline Williams of Longview, Mary and Bob Allen of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Wayne and Nancy Harris of Marshall. He always liked to be in charge of things and always liked to play pranks and tease. He will be missed by his family and many friends. And what an appropriate day for him to leave this world than on Memorial Day..... a day to honor our veterans. Family visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. this evening, May 28, 2008, at Rader Funeral Home. Services for will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 29, 2008, at Rader Funeral Home Chapel in Longview, with Pastor Randy Carter officiating. Burial with follow in Memory Park Cemetery. TODD, John Paul, 80, of Covington died Monday, May 26, 2008. He was born in Eastland County Texas on May 23, 1928 to the late John Paul and Pearl Pittard Todd, Sr. He proudly served our country in the United States Navy during WWII as a Navy Submariner. Mr. Todd was a retired electrician and a member of Lovejoy Methodist Church, Golden Fleece #6 Masonic Lodge where he was a Past Master, Eastside Scottish Rite, Arab Shrine Temple, Alcovy Shrine Club, American Legion Post 77 in Conyers, and Elks Lodge #1806 in Covington. Mr. Todd is survived by his wife Margaret Todd of Covington, step-daughter Tammy Smith of Conyers; step-son Major Tim Reburn of Reinstein Germany; grandchildren Quinton Upshaw, Ashley Upshaw, Hannah Reburn, and Hunter Reburn. Funeral services for Mr. Todd will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday May 29, 2008 in the Chapel of Wheeler Funeral Home with the Rev. Joe Nicholson officiating. Interment will follow in Lovejoy Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening from 7:00 until 9:00 PM at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to the Masonic Children's Home or Lovejoy Methodist Church. Wheeler Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of the arrangements. (770) 786-7111
