At random: Coronation ceremonies of Emperor Alexander II of Russia in 1855 were enlivened by a submarine concert. Wilhelm Bauer, a Bavarian inventor, took three musicians under the waters of Kronstadt Harbor in a submarine he had built, where they played appropriate music during the coronation. The music was distinctly heard on the surface.

ABEL, Albert F., 85, passed away peacefully May 11, 2008. Mr. Abel was born in Marshfield, Ore. Nov. 7, 1922. He joined the United States Navy in December 1941 and served in World War II, the Korean War and in Vietnam. He retired in 1971 after 30 years of service as a submariner. Al is survived by his two children, James M. Abel of Portsmouth and Jannis A. Gore and her husband Dr. James O. Carleo of Virginia Beach; and four grandchildren, Jonathan F. Gore, Jennifer L. Gore, Justin T. Gore and Jacob D. Gore, all of Virginia Beach. Al will be missed by all who knew and loved him. We wish to thank the VA Palliative Care Unit, VA Hospital, for the love, care, respect and kindness given to our father in his final days. A burial at sea is planned.


LANE, Melvin Russell, 85, passed away on May 23, 2008. He was a beloved husband, father and grandfather. Mr. Lane was born on October 2, 1922 in Boswell, Oklahoma. He was the third child of Katie Bell and Mario n Lane of Porterville California. He is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Mrs. Beadie Lane; daughter, Mrs. Jeannetta Myers; son-in-law, Gordon Myers of Lakewood, California; grandson, Mark Myers of Chicago, Illinois; and granddaughter, Melissa Douglas of Costa Mesa, California. He is also survived by siblings: Mrs. Beatrice Coffaro of San Francisco, California, Mrs. Jessie Hanks of Effingham, Illinois, Mrs. Jo Jackson of Cal Nev Ari, Nevada, Mr. Alex Lane of Lubbock, Texas and Mr. Jim Lane of Cal Ne v Ari, Nevada. Mr. Lane grew up in Boswell, Oklahoma and graduated from Boswell High School in the class of 1943. He enlisted in the Navy in 1943 and attended the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis for naval training and submarine schooling in New London, Connecticut. He served in the Navy aboard the USS Guardfish (SS-217) and the USS Jack (SS-259) from November 1943 to December 1945. After discharge from the Navy he returned to family and friends in Porterville, California. He moved to Los Angeles in 1946 and joined the International Brotherhood of Operating Engineers. He was introduced to Beadie Chappel by his mother at a local church in Porterville in 1950 and married in 1952. He worked from 1946 to 1976 for the Owl Crane and Trucking Company and served many years as union steward for their employees. Mr. Lane served Local 12 as a Union Crane Representative until retirement in 1984. Mr. Lane was unheralded for his many acts of kindness and generosity to others. He and his wife retired to Bullhead City, Arizona where he loved to fish the Colorado River. His greatest joy was being around his two grandchildren, Mark and Melissa. Mr. and Mrs. Lane were currently residing at The Quaker Gardens Friends Home for Senior Living in Stanton, Califonia. A Memorial Service will be held on May 28, 2008 at Westminister Memorial Park. Services conducted by Pastor Norvil Hadley from Quaker Gardens Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Quaker Gardens Memory Care Center at 12151 Dale St. Stanton, California 90680.


TORRENCE, Sr., George Allen, 87, died at his residence on May 24, 2008. He was born in Akron, OH and moved to this area from Miami, FL in 1991. He was a veteran of WW II serving in the United States Navy. He was retired from the United States Postal Service. Mr. Torrence was Protestant in faith, a member of the North Central Chapter of Submarine Veterans of WW II, American Legion Post #284, Belleview and National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He is survived by his wife Deborah Torrence, Summerfield; daughters, Belinda Torrence, Summerfield, Sandra Torrence, Ft. McCoy, Fl; son, George A. Torrence, Jr. Hollywood, FL; stepsons, Jerald A. Torano, Tallahassee; and stepchildren Brandi, Brock, and Blake; sister, Gail Williams, Texas; brothers, Jerry Torrence and Lanny Torrance, both of Texas; 15 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m., Friday, May 30, 2008 at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell with honors. . Visitation will be from 5 - 7 p.m. Thursday at HIERS-BAXLEY FUNERAL SERVICES, 5946 SE Robinson Road, Belleview.
