Words spoken by sportscaster Jim McKay discribing the death of the Isreali Olympians after the 1972 murderous rampage by the Black September terrorists. Jim passed away yesterday at 85 years of age. He was my favorite sportscaster who brought ABC's Wide World of Sports into our homes. I especially enjoyed the Olympic coverage and the winter sports events that he covered sso well.

I agree.  He was a pleasure to listen to.

I was surprised to discover that he served in the Navy from 1943-46.

Rune Arledge and Jim McKay gave us ABC's Wide World of Sports...They introduced us to "the wide word of sports" most of us had never been exposed to. They gave us ski jumping...slolum...the luge...downhill skiing...hurling....those Scots with their sliding granite stones and brooms, whatever in the hell that's called (is it curling?)....They gave us polo...cliff diving...Summo wrestling...the biatholon....camel racing...grouse shooting....tarpon fishing....grand pre auto racing...and they explained it all to us in detail. And throughout it all Jim McKay remained a perfect gentleman and the type of fellow every American boy should be issued to be his grandfather. RCK, Thanks for the reminder and compliments on the wisdom of choosing Jim McKay as your favorite sportscaster....No one can top you on such a selection. DEX

James Kenneth McManus (September 24, 1921 – June 7, 2008), better known by his professional name of Jim McKay, was an American television sports journalist.

McKay is best known for hosting ABC's Wide World of Sports (1961–1998). His "...thrill of victory, and the agony of defeat" introduction for that program has passed into American pop culture. He is also known for television coverage of twelve Olympic Games, and for his reporting on the Munich Massacre at the 1972 Summer Olympics.

McKay covered a wide variety of special events, including horse races such as the Kentucky Derby, golf events such as the British Open, and the Indianapolis 500.

McKay's son, Sean McManus, a protege of Roone Arledge, ([1]) is president of CBS' Sports and News divisions.

“ When I was a kid my father used to say our greatest hopes and our worst fears are seldom realized. Our worst fears have been realized tonight. They have now said there were eleven hostages; two were killed in their rooms yesterday morning, nine were killed at the airport tonight. They're all gone."[

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy as the commander of a minesweeper.
He served in the Navy from 1943 to 1946, including a period in which he captained a minesweeper escorting convoys from Trinidad to Brazil.

{SNIP}

Wonder if he was related to Bob McManus who posts occasionally to Martini's BBS. He's ex-submarines and currently an editor at the NY Post.
