WERT, Woodrow Wilson, 92, known as "Bailey" or "Woody", died June 8, 2008, at the Veterans Home of California at Yountville. He was born April 24, 1916, in San Mateo, CA, to Charles and Florence West. His family moved to Swanton, near Davenport. Bailey graduated from Santa Cruz High School in 1935, enlisted in the US Navy in1938 and entered boot camp at the US Naval Training Center, San Diego. In 1941, he graduated from the Submarine Training School, New London, CT. He graduated from Advanced Torpedo School days after the attack on Pearl Harbor. During WWII, Woody made a total of 10 war patrols aboard the U.S. submarines Greenling, Peto, and Cavalla, and was awarded Presidential Unit Citations for service on the Greenling and Cavalla. On its first war patrol, the Cavalla supplied information on the movement of a Japanese task force that led to American victory during the Battle of the Philippine Sea; it also sank a Japanese carrier which had been involved in the attack on Pearl Harbor. For his performance during that action, he earned a commendation. He achieved the rank of Chief Torpedoman while on the Cavalla. He was also on the Cavalla in Tokyo Bay on September 2, 1945, when the formal documents of surrender were signed, ending World War II. After the war, Woody met Lt. Margaret Peg' Gemmill, a Navy nurse, and they were married on September 14, 1949. They had a son, Charles Robert, and a daughter Kathleen Diane. Woody's post-war service included duty on an additional seven submarines. His performance resulted in two more letters of commendation and a Commanding Officer's Meritorious Mast. He retired from the US Navy in 1960. Bailey and Peg moved to Freedom, CA, where they purchased a small, neglected farm and brought it back to life. He joined the Submarine Veterans of WWII in 1970 and attended meetings and reunions around the country. In 1974, they moved to Little River, CA, where he built a log home with help from his son. After Peg passed away in 1984, Woody also lived in Petaluma, CA; Elma, WA; and Middletown, CA, before moving to St. Helena, CA in 2000. He was active in submarine veterans organizations and enjoyed visiting family throughout the US. In his 80s, he spent many hours working on the computer assembling an enormous digital photo album chronicling the histories of family, friends, his Navy career, his travels, and his involvement in various sub vet organizations. In 2006 Woody moved into the Veterans Home of California at Yountville. With the help of his long-time friend, Dorothy Press, he continued his involvement in sub vet organizations until a few months before his passing. Woodrow W. Wert was well-known for his generosity, commitment to family, pursuit of excellence, strong work ethic, curiosity, humor, and story-telling. He is survived by: his son and daughter-in-law, Charles & Margaret Wert; his daughter, Kathleen Odom; his brother and sister-in-law, Richard & Annie West; his sister-in-law, Lena Shaw; his dear friends Dorothy Press and Filomena Da Silva, nieces, nephews, and cousins; and, numerous friends and shipmates. Funeral service is June 17, 11am, with burial service immediately following at the Sacramento Valley VA National Cemetery, Dixon. In lieu of flowers, donations in the name of Woodrow W. Wert CTM USN' may be made to Cavalla Historical Foundation, 2504 Church Street, Galveston, TX 77550.
