NORTH, Joseph Perry, 85, beloved husband of Rosalie Brookshaw North, died peacefully at his home on June 17, 2008. A memorial service and a reception will be held at Peachtree Road United Methodist Church, 3180 Peach- tree Road, N.W. Atlanta, GA, on Sunday, July 13, 2008 at 2:00 PM. Joe was a bighearted, supportive father and grandfather, a loyal friend, successful businessman, caring brother, devoted Ga. Tech supporter, and loving husband. The last of eight children, he was born in Newnan, Ga. on May 5, 1923 to Thomas B. and Helen Walton North. Shortly after his birth, the North family moved to Atlanta. As a young boy and a dutiful son during the depression, he helped his family with his meager earnings from his paper route between 10th and 14th streets, beginning a lifelong love for the city of Atlanta. He attended Home Park Elementary and graduated from Tech High in 1941. Enlisting in the US Navy in World War II, Mr. North served in the Pacific as a submarine motor machinist 2nd class on the USS Queenfish (SS-393). The Queenfish was named one of a select group of WWII submarines that received a Presidential Unit Citation. Having made 5 combat war patrols, the Queenfish survived dozens of depth charge attacks and sank 12 enemy ships. In September of 1945, Mr. North married Doris Johnson, who became the mother of his three children. She preceded him in death in 1972. After the war, he attended the Georgia Institute of Technology for two years, and began his career as a commercial insulation contractor with North Brothers Inc., the company that his brothers Sam and John had founded. He became the Atlanta branch manager of North Brothers in the fifties and sixties. During his career, Mr. North was a member of the American Society of Testing Materials Committee, served as chairman of the CSpecification Committee for the Southeastern Insulation Contractors Association, and helped to author The Insulation Specification Book which mechanical engineers used throughout the southeast. He was recognized for his efforts on behalf of the Ronald McDonald House for contributing to its construction in the Emory area. He also served as a lemon law and construction arbitrator. An ardent Tech fan, Joe North met his wife of over twenty years, Rosalie, at a Ga. Tech Boosters Club meeting. Enjoying a Ga. Tech victory with Rosalie was one of his favorite pastimes. He was a dedicated member of the steering committee of the Ga. Tech Alumni Legislative Network, and was named Volunteer of the Year in 1993 while president of the DeKalb Tech Club. He was a charter member of the Cherokee Town and Country Club. Joe served as a member of the administrative board and the Outreach Commission at Peachtree Rd. United Methodist Church, where he was one of the first presidents of the caring and loving Timothy Sunday School Class. In the seventies, Mr. North lived on Lake Lanier where he enjoyed his time as a volunteer fireman for Forsyth County. With his white hair and beard, he became a costumed Santa Claus during the holidays. At various events and in classrooms, he convinced children of all ages that he was one of Santa's real helpers - a fact that his three children happily had learned in their early years. Joe North will be remembered as a kind, fun-loving soul who liked to tell good (and bad) jokes and especially loved to make people laugh. He is predeceased by his four brothers; James Urie North, who died in the Battle of the Bulge in WWII, Sam Leigh North, Thomas Monroe North, and John Walton North; two sisters, Sue North Mills and Octavia North Brummette; and stepson, Loren (Champ) Young, Jr. In addition to his loving wife, Rosalie, Joe is survived by his sister, Louise North Cole, formerly of Atlanta, now living in Bolivar, Tennessee; two daughters and their husbands, Teri and Jimmy Milhous of Monroe, Janet and Rodney King of Loganville; one son, Joseph Johnson (Johnny) North of Mableton; two grandsons, Joseph Holland King and Stephen Gray King; his sister-in-law, Lucile Brookshaw; brother-in-law and wife, Gene and Karen Brookshaw of Birmingham; stepdaughter Loralie Arnold and her daughter Amanda; stepdaughter, Ruth Jackson and husband Marcus, and their sons, Tyler and Brandon; five nieces and eight nephews, and several great nieces and nephews. The family sincerely and deeply appreciates the tender care provided by Hospice Atlanta. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Ga. Tech by earmarking your donation to the Alexander Tharpe / Homer Rice Endowment, GTAA, 150 Bobby Dodd Way, Atlanta GA. 30332, or to the St Mary's Submarine Museum Inc., 102 St. Mary's St. West, St. Mary's, GA 31558, or to the charity of your choice. Arrangement by the Cremation Society of Georgia. 404- 355-7627 JOSEPH PERRY NORTH
