TINSLER, James "Jim" Edward, 82, lost his courageous battle with cancer on Thursday, June 5, 2008. He left this world peacefully with his beloved wife and two of his five children close by his side. His wife, Jean, has been by his side for over 60 years and even though she now faces each new morning without him, she is thankful for the many happy and loving years they had together. Jim was born on August 6, 1925, in Kalamazoo to Leslie and Harriett (Nichols) Tinsler. He was Leslie's third child and Harriett's only child. His older half-siblings, Forrest and Cora, preceded Jim in death some time ago. Too young to be drafted, at age 16 he proudly joined the U.S. Navy and served submarine duty during WWII in the South Pacific. Our country owes much to him and the many other men and women of the "Greatest Generation." After the war, he attained a B.A. and M.A. from Western Michigan University and began a long career teaching math and science first at Wayland Union HS and then at Hillside Jr. High in Kalamazoo. He also spent many summers teaching drivers' education to Wayland HS students and also taught night classes for adults in Kalamazoo. Jim leaves behind his wife, Jean (Francisco) Tinsler, and five children and their families: Joanne (Tinsler) Palko, her husband, John and daughter, Juliet of Redwood City, CA; Jeffrey Tinsler and his wife, Beth (Dunsmore) of Costa Rica, and their two daughters, Amelia (Tinsler) Powell, and her husband, Marcus, and Carrie of Phoenix, AZ; Jane (Tinsler) Mulder, her husband, Bruce and their children, Lenny, Chad and Dori of Scotts, MI; Lt. Col. (Ret.) James Tinsler Jr., his wife, Deborah (Hayes) and daughters, Sarah and Chelsea of Las Vegas, NV; and June (Tinsler) Nezamis, her husband, Jim and children, Phoebe and Phillip of Fredon, NJ. We will dearly miss our patriarch who was forever devoted to caring for his wife and family, always there when we needed him and teaching us by example what a good husband, father and grandfather should be. He exemplified strength and character to his family and to many others along the road of his long, rich life. He was a gifted teacher and talented wood-craftsman; many young lives were enriched by his love of teaching and our homes will be graced for generations to come with the beautiful handmade treasures that he created. Last, but not least, we will miss his wonderful sense of humor that never left him even on the darkest days. Respecting his wishes, an informal memorial service will occur at a date yet to be determined. The family asks that those wishing to contribute in his memory will consider supporting those organizations that are altruistically dedicated to developing a non-invasive cure for all cancers. Arrangements were handled by Cook Funeral & Cremation Services.
