LONG, Jr., Howard W., 85, died on Friday, June 20, 2008, at Norwalk Hospital, in Norwalk, CT. He was born on May 31, 1923, in New York City. An entrepreneur and businessman, he was retired from his own company, Sea Pure Products, Inc. He spent his youth in Scarsdale, N.Y., and Westerly, and moved to New Canaan, CT. in October 1953 after marrying Mary B. Toucey from Somers, NY, and Watch Hill. Upon graduating from high school in the early 1940s, Mr. Long attended the New York State Maritime Academy at Fort Schuyler, in Bronx, NY. He graduated from the academy as an ensign in the Merchant Marine Corps. He served his country during World War II in both the Atlantic and Pacific arenas. His first tour of duty was on the troop ships crossing the Atlantic as a deck officer and navigator. Upon his return from the first tour of duty in the Atlantic, he joined the Navy and trained for service at the U.S. Submarine Base in Groton, Conn. His second tour of duty was on the submarine, USS Finback (SS-230), in the Pacific. At the end of World War II, he was commended by President Harry S. Truman and James V. Forrestal for service to his country. After the war, Mr. Long established Fraser Research, a market research firm in New York City, doing research for many companies and publications, among them, Yachting and Boating magazines. Later, he formed his own company, Sea Pure Products, Inc. and worked in this endeavor until his retirement. Mr. Long's favorite pastime was sailing. He was a member of the Watch Hill Yacht Club in Rhode Island for more than 55 years. In 1952, in his beloved wooden raven, Pipper, he raced and won the First Annual Block Island Sound Race (now called the Clarence A. Horton Block Island Sound Race). Mr. Long is survived by Mary Long, his wife of 55 years; five children and their spouses, Vernona and Robin Price, Louisa and Charles Mueller, Howard and Amy Long, Henry and Julie Long, and John Long. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Sarah Price Tschorn, and her husband Daniel Tschorn, Amanda Price, Ben Mueller, Katie Long, William Mueller, and Megan Long. A Memorial Service will be held for Mr. Long at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 9, at the First Presbyterian Church in New Canaan. In lieu of flowers, please consider gifts in remembrance of Howard Long to The First Presbyterian Church Concert Series Fund.
