Hybreds with 50 to 60 mpg fuel economy that sport a load of batteries. That is until the batts go south for the winter with a Specific Gravity that won't float a hygrometer bulb. Any input on these wonders of the road. Somehow I think when you shop one of these four wheel demons of distruction, you ain't gettin the truth about operating costs, batt. life, upkeep costs, batt life ect., ect., ect.

I read somewhere that the untold truth about the japanese hybrids is the huge cost and trouble of disposal the batteries used in those cars. Don't know if it has become better or not. Probably a huge toxic mess if they are in a wreck.

It is hard to get the real story about hybreds. I'd like to find a site on the net and hear what owners have to say about the latest wonders of the road.......Get a horse?

I agree that the truth about hybrid car actual costs, true mileage, and maintenance is not being told.

I would like to know the real story.

I have looked online and found a lot of pro-hybrid car fluff.

Common sense dictates that there has to be a higher maintenance cost associated with hybrids because of the additional sensors and the mechanics needed to switch between the electric motor and gasoline engine.

I also suspect the deck is stacked when calculating mpg.
How is the driving around town mileage with the additional weight?
Is fuel mpg calculated with electrical loads on/off and air conditioning on/off? I would bet all loads are off.

I'm not against the hybrid cars. I would just like to know the real story about long term operating costs.

I am driving a paid for 94 S-10 V-6 pickup to and from work.

It is 95% highway driving and I am getting around 24 -26 mpg.
It takes approximately 2 gallons per day and that is costing me from 15 to 17 cents per mile.

I would be hard pressed to justify the cost of a hybrid.
