At random: On August 17, 1958, the USS SKATE circumnavigated the globe in about fifty minutes. The SKATE was at a radius of about two miles from the North Pole at the time, and the distance traveled in the circumnavigation was about twelve miles.

.. has dropped anchor in Puget Sound this afternoon. The Coast Guard Eagle is visiting to take part in Tacoma's Tall Ships Days later this week. Been many years since she was out this way. Use to watch her go up and down the Thames while back in NL.

When I was at SubSchool in 1959, I was assigned as lookout on one of those "daily ops" Block Island Sound training runs. There was a dense fog as we cleared the bridges and All of a sudden there was the EAGLE standing in.....I was speechless.....I didn't report my newly held contact....Finally the OD saqys...."Sailor, You see anything out there?" and I said..."Yessir, Some kind of pirate ship er sumthin....I don't know what n' the hell it is.". It had its' sails furled but dammit that image is seared in my brain. DEX
