KILLIAN, Donald Luther, 83, passed away on Tuesday, July 1, 2008 at home with his wife and daughter by his side, following a yearlong struggle with lung cancer. Don was born July 7, 1924 in Carlsbad. He was raised on a family farm in Carlsbad, and joined the Navy in 1940. He was in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on December 7, 1941, standing watch on the submarine Dolphin, at the time of the attack. After six years in the military, Don went to work in Newport Beach where he met his wife, formerly Marilyn Gray. They married on January 5, 1952 and moved to Del Mar where they built a home above the lagoon at Torrey Pines Beach and had two children, Lyn Mari and D. Lawrence. Don was an engineer with Ryan Aeronautical for over 30 years, retiring from there in 1989. In retirement, he and his wife traveled the world on cruise ships. They also moved from Del Mar to San Marcos in 1993. Besides his wife and daughter, Don is survived by his grandsons, Eric Smith and Jason Killian. He is preceded in death by his son, Larry; two brothers, Oliver and Paul; sister, Virginia Killian Telford. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Elizabeth Hospice in Escondido. Sign the Guest Book online obits.nctimes.com
