People keep sending me e-mails about this light-in-his-loafers sheriff somewhere out west that gets his jollies out of putting men in pink clothing, making them live in tents and showing them he's not governed by anything considered to be lawful by most standards of decency practiced by most law respecting judicial systems. FIRST and foremost, ther law as envisioned by the Founders was never intended to be administered in accordance with individual whimsical self created predjudice....There is a distinct difference between justified punishment, even handed properly administered detention and the extraction of justly administered years of servitude and NOT the imposition of some homosexual jerk's idea of what's cute to do to individuals entrusted to his stewardship who the bully can push around. In grammer school anyone who acted like this overgrown fairy would have had the hell beaten out of him on the way home and that would have been the end of his pink fetish crap. He's repulsive...His mentality led to the disgrace of Abu Garab....the immoral behavior of RENDITION and the loss of respecf of American ideals, national honor and the way this nation was regarded for the way we acquitted ourselves in WWII....This queer thug Sheriff is more like a South American banana republic dictator than a law enforcement officer, you would want your grandchildren to look up to and emulate. Sure, there are folks out there who think his cutsieness is tough and macho...Well it's not...It spits in the face of good law enforcement officers who do their jobs without self agrandizing showboating...public pansy showboating and making a mockery of the norms of civil detention. The actions of this clown demean this nation in the eyes of the good law abiding nations of the world where punishment is not subject to individual whimsical bulls**t like this twinkled toes "pinky princess" overweight sissy bully thinks is cute...and his toadie following. In short...don't send me anymore nonsense about this Un American animal. DEX

Hey Dex   I know I am tired of some of those types emails but I did do the Snoopes thing on this guy and he would actually seem to be the type guy I would vote for in some ways but in others he does seem a bit whacked but no worse than the ones we get around here in many cases. There is a reason for the Pink uniforms (actually it is not the uniforms just the underwear, uniforms were chnaged to Black and White stripe, which were "inHuman" and it wasn't because he is gay if we are talking about the same guy Joe Arpiao http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Arpaio

It was to prevent theft    The American_Civil_Liberties_Union has strongly critisized him for doing things like taking away porno, cable TV, weights and numerous other "rights"

seems that there must be more to the story  as they have kept him in office there since 1992 and he certainly has caused enough law suits to be termed for cause if the people of his area wanted to. Not that I am a fan of abuse just think some of his Radial ideas should be in effect every where, we pay taxes to coddle in some ways the criminal, just look at the statistics of what we pay to house our criminals it is outrageous my cable costs me $60 a month imagine what the jails cable bill is? Why is it wacko to have the criminals do some of the road work, brush clearing, cleaning up parks (the Old CCC type work) etc instead of paying our tax $$ for them. (same should be said for welfare in My Opinion)

I just saw a TV documentary special on another one of his "events".  He has reinstated the Chain Gang, but with groups of fifteen women.  Women can volunteer for this and are allowed to get out of tent city to work outside the prison.

just realized that you maybe getting emails about someone else I did a google of pink uniforms and found their are jails in Texas Tenn Fla Ohio Nevada Ca, Utah

some of the stories are very interesting as are some of the blog responses   I would recommend the reading there is a sharp liberal conservative line here. and the topic could get to be political and is definitely not Sub related except I am sure there is some comparison to when we had to change over to poopie suits and will be the same outcry when they have to go to Cammies on the boats

At first glance, I thought his methods were well beyond the law, and civilized societal norms, but upon second -and third- look, I tend to agree with him. Why are we coddling criminals?

Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Arizona has a jail overcrowding problem just like all the other large city sheriffs throughout the U.S. He got a bunch of military surplus squad tents and set them up to house the extra prisoners. The ACLU complained that it was inhumane. The sheriff countered that these tents were the same tents housing "our servicemen" in Iraq, and if it was good enough for the Army, it was good enough for prisoners.

He also had a problem with prisoners getting discharged with prison underwear, so he had it all dyed pink. That solved his underwear theft problem.

The prisoner chain gangs are all voluntary. You can sit around in jail vegetating, or at least get out and do something. The voluntary program is also based on a reward system. You screw up, you can't volunteer. There is also s supplemental reward in that every day spent on the chain gang is a day cut off the jail sentence. And yes, the chain gang is in black and white stripes. Would people prefer they were in business suits?

He is saving a lot of money by going to a cold cuts for lunch, rather than a fully cooked hot lunch.

The law requires he only provide safe housing of prisoners. There is nothing about the quality of that prison life. Same with taxpayer provided porn or cable tv or Filet Mignon dinners. They are in jail, not in a country club.

Sheriff Joe's methods have been tested in court, and are in line with the laws of the State of Arizona. Everything he has done, has been to address a specific problem, and nothing has been done on a whim. A lot of it has been done in response to budgetary cutbacks. Other sheriffs are keeping close watch on his methods, and his methods are spreading to other states. It's difficult to argue with his money saving successes, and he keeps getting re-elected.

On my ship, there was 71 sailors. Our bunks were 24 inches wide and 76 inches long. We got a clean fart-sack every other week. Sometimes the chow wasn't something we liked, but it was healthy and freshly cooked. The ship was only 172 feet long and 35 feet wide. Were the minesweep a jail, there would have been a serious overcrowding problem. In forward berthing, (1 room) there was 33 bunks. This was in an area 20 feet long and 30 feet wide. The bunks were stacked 3-tall.

In the after battery of a diesel boat (from reports I read on this board) there was insufficient space to turn over in any bunk. Were a DBF boat a jail, could it be considered as having an over-crowding problem - especially with hot-bunking? Would any DBF experienced sailor consider this in-humane treatment of an honored serviceman? Would it be considered cruel and in-humane treatment to institute hot-bunking in a county jail? Your decision.

....le tme tell you that here in Oz at least, they are more than well looked after.

I have the 'pleasure' of looking after animals that have raped and killed children. Kidnapped children and had their sicko pleasures with them for two weeks....and then try to lay the blame at the child....'he wanted it'.
I look after sicko's that killed a mum, then 4 kids, whilst doing so had sex with them.

In short, I look after some people that should have been shot. But here in Oz we don't have Capital Punishment so instead we look after them.

They have free accommodation, free meals, free clothing ( green ) showers, sport, library blah blah blah......

I do NOT believe they should be tortured, but I sure do believe they are treated better than they deserve, that is a fact!

One said to me on e day about how hard it was and that I wouldn't be able to handle a week here........I was gobsmacked....I was doing it harder as a 16 year old when I was a Junior Recruit at HMAS LEEUWIN

They are on a holiday Dex....a holiday. wearing pink clothing is the least of their worries.

I forgot to mention that they also watch DVD;'s that are played for them......they get to watch movies like 'SAW' .....'Hannibal Lector' etc etc

is that the type of movie we want killers etc to be watching?

a few officers complained about it and where informed basically to shut up, it is their 'Right' to watch it.

Go figure.

Tell ya what Dex, I have tried to stay away from your posts but I will ask you this....IF you can do a COUPLE OF DAYS (a FULL 72 hours) in the Jail at Maricopa County Facility in the desert with the rest of the inmates who "suffer" so badly by sleeping in GI cots and under a GI tent and wear "poopie suits" that have been colored Pink because of the inmates trying to escape and YOU have found their treatment so INHUMANE that I will gladly VOLUNTEER for another tour in IRAQ sleeping in the same spaces as you for the 72 hour period..... OOOOOPPPPPSSSS should have mentioned that I have already ASKED.....

BTW do you know what a "blow hard" is not to mention what a "sad sack is"??? BECAUSE YOU need to LOOOK in the mirror And BTW remember this when you get up in the morning and see this and send this email to your "friends" so that they can say that there is NO way that I EVER qualified submarines... remember this my friend I AM qualifed SUBMARINES and I HAVE BEEN IN GROUND combat and that those prisioners are being treated BETTER then I ever was IN combat..

But what the heck do you care, you are a submarine vet of a NON WAR nation who was glad to get out and BITCH about her nations soldiers at EVERY chance that you have had because we DO NOT hold the SAME standards that you were raised on...

There is no overcrowding in Maricopa county jails. There are beds empty. There is no need for tent city.
The inmates wear pink underwear and some have pink stripped uniforms.
Lawsuits against the county jail system have cost the county more than any county of similar size.
The MCSO has a tank, for whatever reason.
Joe would rather arrest violators of civil laws than criminal law.
