Col. Lloyd "Robby" Robertson, 85, former Superintendent of the Arizona Highway Patrol (Arizona Department of Public Safety) and Superintendent of Liquor License and Control, answered his last call on Monday June 30, 2008. Robby, as he was known to his friends, was a native Arizonian and long time public servant to the State and the Nation. Born in 1922 where what is now runway number one at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport, Robby grew up in the valley and attended St. Mary's High School. He enlisted in the US Navy prior to World War II and soon found himself in the submarine service and served at Midway, Guam, Guadalcanal, Coral Sea, and all across the Pacific. It was during this time he married his wife of 63 years, Geraldine "Gerry" Mulville of Buckeye, Arizona. After the war he returned to Arizona and continued his public service with the Arizona Game and Fish Department. He soon transferred over to the Arizona Highway Patrol and was given badge #17. His first patrol area was Benson and then Northern Arizona. He rose through the ranks culminating as acting Director of the DPS. During his career at D.P.S., Robby had a reputation for caring and fairness, ensuring the professional education and development of a diverse state police force. Robby was the first Officer from the Arizona Highway Patrol to graduate from the F.B.I National Academy in 1953. After his DPS career he continued service as the Superintendent of Arizona Liquor License and Control. Here he reviewed the Arizona Territorial Statutes, removing old laws such as the one that allowed children under 16 to buy hard liquor with a note from their parents. Robby is survived by his wife Gerry; their four children; Jim, a retired DPS Officer; Rosanna Tarr, a mother and social worker; Chris, a US Army Colonel, and David, a US State Department Diplomat; sister, Mary Jane Brooks; 14 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held from 4-7PM, with rosary at 6:30PM, Sunday, July 6, 2008, Desert Hills Chapel, 6500 E. Bell Rd., Scottsdale. Funeral Mass will be 11am, Monday, July 7, 2008, Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Scottsdale, followed by interment at National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona.
