Subject: Obit Messenger results for 07/11/08.

BLACK, Sr., Robert G., CAPT, USN, Ret., 90, passed peacefully into the hands of the Lord Jesus Christ on Tuesday, July 8, 2008, surrounded by his family. The funeral service will be conducted Saturday 11 a.m. in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in Cherry Hill Cemetery with military honors. Bob was born in Gallatin, Mo. on October 22, 1917, and graduated from Louisiana State University. Following graduation, he entered the United States Navy in June 1941 and attended N.C. State University for graduate studies. While in Raleigh, he met his wife, Jane Forbes Black, who together shared close to 65 years of marriage. During 32 years of service to his country in the United States Navy, Bob was assigned to several submarine duties that included assuming command of the Navy's first nuclear submarine division in 1957. Later in his service, Bob was assigned command of the USS Hunley (AS 31) in Holy Loch, Scotland, command of Submarine Squadron Four in Charleston, S.C. and assumed command of the U.S. Naval Station in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He retired from the United States Navy in May, 1972. His naval career was distinguished and was recognized through being awarded several decorations and medals that included the Silver Star, Gold Star in lieu of Second Silver Star, Bronze Star with Combat V, Gold Star in lieu of second Bronze Star, Navy Unit Commendation, Submarine Combat Insignia with eight stars, American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal (three stars), European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, National Defense Service Medal (one star), and Philippine Liberation Ribbon (one star). Following his retirement from the United States Navy, he joined Data-Design Laboratories in Alexandria, Va. until 1984 when he moved to Greenville. Bob was active in the Greenville community that included the Greenville Rotary, Jarvis Memorial Methodist Church, and Treasurer of the Friends of Jarvis Memorial Library. He was preceded in death by a brother and a sister. He is survived by his wife, Jane Forbes Black, of Greenville; son, Robert G. Black Jr. and wife, Beth; and grandson, Matthew S. Black and wife, Elizabeth, all of Raleigh; sister, Kathleen Black Beckworth, of Little Rock, Ark.; three nephews; and three nieces. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Wilkerson Funeral Home. Flowers are accepted, but memorial contributions can be made to Jarvis Memorial Methodist Church, 510 S. Washington St., Greenville, NC 27834, or to a charity of ones choice.
