BUTLER, Rev. Dr. Vern W. "Pat", 82, of Shavehead Lake, passed away at 9:45 p.m. on Wednesday, July 9, 2008, in Doctors Lake Health Care, Orange Park, FL, after an extended illness. He was born in Chicago, IL, May 27, 1926 to Rev. Dr. Vernon Butler and Ruth (Hulse) Butler and moved to the Cassopolis, MI area permanently in 1991, after vacationing here for many years. He married the former Marguerite Ellis, January 29, 1947 in Fort Edward, NY, and she survives. Also surviving are two children, Ellis Butler and his wife, Sheryl of Cassopolis and Dr. M. Kathleen Ebener of Orange Park, FL; three grandchildren, Dr. Robert Ebener and his wife, Laura, Emily Pryor and her husband, Will, Steven Butler and four great-grandchildren. Rev. Butler was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson and by his bother and sister. Rev. Butler was a member of the Wabash Presbytery of Indiana. He was a graduate of the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and received his Doctorate degree from McCormick Theological Seminary, Chicago. He had served congregations as the Pastor in Universal, PA, Park Forest, IL, Monmouth, IL, and Hamburg, NY, and had served as the Interim Pastor for churches in Elkhart, IN, Niles, MI, and most recently in 1997 for Westminster Presbyterian Church, South Bend. Rev. Butler served his country as a submariner during World War II, serving in USS SEA DEVIL (SS-400) in the Pacific Theater. A funeral service for Rev. Butler will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 14, 2008, in the United Presbyterian Church, Cassopolis. Officiating will be Rev. Allan L. Widerquist, retired Pastor and Rev. Stephen Kazar, pastor of the church. Interment will be at Plum Grove Cemetery, Union, MI, where military honors will be rendered by members of William E. Lozier VFW Post #10704 and by Efton James American Legion Post #206, both of Cassopolis. Friends may call in the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday. Memorials in Rev. Butler's name may be made to the United Presbyterian Church, Cassopolis.


GERTSCH, Gerald Conrad, 67, passed away on March 7, 2008 in Honolulu, Hawaii after a long battle with cancer. He was born on June 17, 1941 in Midway, Utah to Joseph Daniel and Leora Morton Gertsch. He married Marilyn Kay Hanchett on June 24, 1967 and they were sealed in the Hawaiian Temple on January 7, 1968. They are the parents of five children: Geri Kay, Kevin Conrad, Gina Mae, Garth Joseph and Ginger Denise Gertsch. Gerald graduated from East High School in Salt Lake City and received a four year full scholarship to BYU, but instead he went into the Navy to defend his country. He was assigned to the Nuclear Submarine USS Sculpin (SSN-590). He was an active member in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He taught seminary and performed genealogy and temple work. He also performed missionary services and converted a number of people into the LDS Church. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn and children, Gina Mae, Ginger Denise and Garth Joseph, his mother, Leora Gertsch Ward, a sister, Jolene Jaster, a brother, Ronald Gertsch and brothers and sisters from a previous marriage: Robert Collins, Carl Collins, Teresa Roberts, Julie Smith, Gayanne Warner and Cathy German and also 39 nieces and nephews. He was the first born grandchild of Elise and Conrad Gertsch Jr. who were two of the early immigrants and settlers of Midway, Utah from Switzerland in the 1890's. He lived an honorable and unselfish life and he had a positive influence on many people. He had a good heart and did whatever he could to help others. He will be missed but never forgotten. A Memorial Service will be held in his honor at the Swiss Chapel Stake Center, 165 North Center Street, Midway, Utah on Saturday, July 19, 2008 at 12 noon. All friends and family are invited to attend.


O’DONNELL, Sr., Thomas F., 77, of East Falmouth, died at Royal Nursing Home in Falmouth on July 10, 2008. He was the husband of Joanne T. (La Forte) O'Donnell for 56 years. Mr. O'Donnell was born and raised in Watertown. For four years during the Korean War, he served in the Navy on the submarine USS Dace (SS-247). Following his honorable discharge in 1954, he resided in the Boston area and worked as a plumber. In 1971, he moved to Falmouth to start his own business, T.F. O'Donnell Plumbing & Heating. He taught plumbing in the evenings at Upper Cape Regional Technical High School. He also coached youth hockey in Falmouth. Besides his wife, he is survived by their five sons, Thomas F. Jr. of East Falmouth, Michael A. of North Falmouth, David R. of Pennsylvania, Stephen J. of East Falmouth, and Glen E. of Northbridge; and eight grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at noon on Monday, July 14, 2008, at St. Elizabeth Seton Church, 481 Quaker Road, North Falmouth, followed by burial at 1:15 p.m. in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alzheimer's Services of Cape Cod & Islands for Research, 712 Main St., Hyannis, MA 02601. SCHEFFER, Raymond K., 86, of Erie, died Wednesday, July 9, 2008 at the University Hospital Geauga Medical Center. He was born on September 10, 1921 in Ohio, son of the late George W. and Lulu Miller Scheffer. He graduated from Academy High School in 1939. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from Grove City College and his Master’s Degree from Gannon University. He served in the U. S. Navy during W.W. II, in the Pacific Submarine Service, serving on the Hoe (SS-258), Gurnard (SS-254) and the Gunnel (SS-253), one of which was the Sub that took photo’s of Tokyo Bay which was strategic in the wiping out of Tokyo Bay. He worked at General Electric and Riley Stoker, where he was a boiler designer. He retired after thirty years from the Pennsylvania DEP in Meadville as an Air Pollution Engineer. He was a member of the Perry-Keystone Lodge # 392, F.&A.M., Zem Zem Shrine, Legion of Honor and active in the Marching Unit, West County Shrine Club and the Erepa Grotto where he served as Monarch in 1971. He enjoyed golf and tennis. Raymond was a very charitable and generous man who helped numerous people. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Gross Scheffer who died in 1978 and two brothers, Earl and James Scheffer. He is survived by his best friend and wife, Linda. A sister, Carolyn Morrow of Erie. A brother, George Scheffer and his wife, Lois of Venice, Fla. A number of nieces and nephews also survived. Friends may call at the Merle E. Wood Funeral Home, Inc. 215 West 25th St., on Sunday from 2 â€" 4 and 7 â€" 9 p.m. and are invited to attend the Funeral Service there on Monday at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Hal Shafer of Emmanuel Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will be at Wintergreen Gorge Cemetery.
