At random: A submarine, the TURTLE, was employed by the American revolutionary army to attack the British. It was built by David Bushnell at Saybrook, Connecticut, just a few miles from the present site of Electric Boat Division of the General Dynamics Corporation, and the U.S. Naval Submarine Base.

NORTHCOTT, Sr., Harlan "Lanny" E., 81, died Thursday, July 17, 2008, while doing what he loved - helping others and flying his airplane. Lanny was born in Waverly, Kansas and eventually made his home in New Orleans, where he spent most of his life before retiring to Sun City Center, Florida. Beloved husband of Peggy W. Northcott. Devoted Father to Harlan E Northcott, Jr., Paula Northcott Klotz and Glenn E. Northcott. Father-in-law of Calvin B. Klotz. Brother-in-law of R.B. Gustafson and wife Nellie R. Gustafson. Adored grandfather of Ashley Northcott Avrard, Jason B. Klotz, Erica Northcott Adams, Brian C. Klotz, Lydia J. Klotz, Jessica Z. Northcott, Austin G. Northcott, Landon B. Northcott and Maggie M. Northcott. Great-grandfather to Corey E. Avrard, Jr, Casey D. Avrard, Mary-Camilla Chiucchiolo and Harlan Jackson Adams. Step-father of Bart Cutshall and Bobbi Bass, Patricia W. Dao and her husband Gustavo E. Dao, Courtney W. McKinney and her husband James P. McKinney. Step-grandfather of Courtney E. Dao, John S. Dao, Gustavo E. Dao, Annan M. McKinney, and Connor J. McKinney. Also survived by many nieces, nephews and many lifelong friends. Mr. Northcott was preceded in death by his first wife and mother of his children, Jane Gustafson Northcott; his parents, Lynne J. Northcott and Galena P. Lewis; his step-parents, Raymond (Hub) Sipes and Ellen G. Northcott and his brother Wayne Joseph Northcott. Lanny attended the University of Mississippi on a full naval scholarship where he received a Bachelor of Science in Geology. While at Ole Miss, he had the honor of playing Freshman football under the legendary Coach John Vaught. He served as a Naval Officer in the Korean Conflict. He was 3rd in command of the destroyer, USS William C. Lawe. Prior to serving on this destroyer, he served on the submarine, USS Segundo (SS-398) as a quartermaster/signalman and assistant navigator. He founded Northcott Exploration Company and also served as Senior Vice President in charge of all oil and gas activities for Tidewater Marine, where he retired in 1993. As a member of the Angel Flight Organization, Mr. Northcott volunteered his private plane, fuel and time to offer free flights for sick and financially deprived patients in need of transportation for 20 years. Mr. Northcott also used his plane to reunite families and friends after Hurricane Katrina. Mr. Northcott served as Past President of the following organizations: New Orleans Geological Society, Country Club Homes Recreation and Jefferson Community Clubs Association. He was also a full voting member of the Governs Energy Advisory Board. He was an avid philanthropist, sports fan, family man and loyal friend who will be missed greatly for his compassion, love of life, humbleness, brilliant mind and most of all, his genuineness! On his final flight, may he find a tailwind to heaven. A service will be held on Thursday, July 24, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. at Leitz-Eagan Funeral Home, 4747 Veterans Memorial Boulevard in Metairie, LA. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Interment will be private in Garden of Memories Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Paris-Yates Chapel, c/o University of Mississippi Foundation Memory House, University, MS 38677. Please feel free to contribute recollections of Mr. Northcott or condolences to his family in the online guestbook at www.legacy.com.
