At random: "I believe it is the duty of every man to act as though the fate of the world depends on them. Surely no one man can do it all. But, one man CAN make a difference.” -- Adm. Hymen Rickover

...to share with you a poem that Cam wrote when he was ten years old.

"The Feather"

An ancient feather balanced on a limb of an old Willow. A small breeze blew the feather onto a circle of black embers. In an instant an amazing Bald Eagle appeared. It's gigantic wings were four feet long. It's bright orange legs with talons as long as my finger, were digging into the soil like roots of a tree. It spread it's wings and flapped it's way up to the sky. The eagle glided way down to a spot where a fire had burned, and began to flap it's powerful wings over the ruined soil. A great cloud of ashes rose off the ground. When the eagle stopped flapping, the land and trees that had been burned were as green as could be. The grass was green and thick. The trees were bright green with big leaves. When the eagle looked around he saw the land was restored, so he flew away again. A soft white feather was all that was left resting on the grass of the new land.

Cameron Corneliuson, November, 2000

I thought that this was very insightful for a ten-year-old. I asked him where he got the idea for this poem. He said that it started with a feather, and turned into an eagle. I guess he and a friend are writing a story together now. I have no idea what it's about.

Not bad, Cora. Not bad at all, especially for so young a boy. You have a right to be proud of him.

That is great, Cora. Give the young man a pat on the back for us.

Those are some powerful images in that piece.

An (future) Eagle Scout writing about another kind of Eagle.

We could get into some deep philosophical discussions about them.

Or we could just enjoy the power of the words, and let our minds fly free on the winds, like the Eagle.

That would make a great indian legend. It has a pheonix type regeneration similarity and is well crafted since it comes full circle. Thanks for sharing. DEX
