At random: A church in Kyoto, Japan calls its congregation to worship with a bell from a submarine. The bell, from the submarine USS RAY was purchased for the church, and was transported to Yokosuka, Japan by another submarine, the USS RONQUIL.

NEBEKER, Dennis "Sarge", 76, of 243 Rope Ferry Road, died Monday, July 21, 2008, at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London. He was born September 18, 1931, in Kemmerer, Wyo., the son of the late Ira and Dee (Wyman) Nebeker. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War with the 7th Infantry Division and was honorably discharged as staff sergeant. He then joined the U.S. Navy and served on seven submarines and a tour of three years as an instructor at the Submarine School in Groton. After retiring from the Navy, he worked as a supervisor for Atlantic Coast Engineering of Niantic, a second shift plant superintendent at Hermitage Hospital Products in Niantic, and then retired from General Dynamics Corporation, Electric Boat Division, as a Fleet Ballistics Missile Program test director engineer. He married Janet A. (Wilson) Nebeker on May 9, 1967. She predeceased him on Dec. 2, 1998. He is survived by his sister, Florence Hinck and her husband, Arno, of Hyrum, Utah, and two nieces, Cathy Hinck of Randolph, Utah, and Kristen Hodges of Laketown, Utah. In his younger years he enjoyed fishing, both salt and fresh water, gardening, golf, UCONN women's basketball, and the Red Sox. Sarge was a member of Bayview Lodge #120 AFAM of Niantic, the American Legion Post # 128 of Niantic, and was a life member of the VFW Post 6573 of Waterford. Sarge is also survived by many good friends, most notably Hank, Joni, Cindy, Melanie, and Elaine, who through their fine efforts made his final years more enjoyable. Funeral arrangements are private at his request. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Animal Welfare League, c/o Armand Lambert, PO Box 1760, Groton CT 06340. The Thomas L.
