At random: "Like the destroyer, the submarine has created its own type of officer and man with language and traditions apart from the rest of the service, and yet at the heart unchangingly of the Serviceā€ -- Rudyard Kipling, The Fringes of the Fleet, 1915

No I don't have a strong clue, but my SWAG would be the Panama Canal Zone, pre-WWII.

The kills look like out by the old sub base in Saint Thomas

My guess as to the I.D. of this boat would be Porpoise SS-172 or Pike SS-173.

Hi Dave, Good to see you. I know what the boat is I'm just looking for location. I checked DANFS and kind of figured it could be Panama or some place in the Caribbean. Just wondered if anyone could be more specific. I never was in those parts so it is all strange to me.
I'm working on your articles.

I have been studying some photos of Coco Solo and while the configuration of the pier is a close match, the shore facilities in the 1930's were much more developed than what is shown in the photo. I would still lean towards Panama, but at some other government owned pier.
