BALLARD, William S., 73, of New Lebanon, OH, went home to be with the Lord on Friday morning, August 1, 2008. Born August 26, 1934 in Dayton, OH, he served in the US Navy active duty for 9+ years from 1955 - 1964 and then in the Reserve for another 13 years. Bill was proud of his Navy service serving on the USS Requin, a submarine, and the USS Orion, a submarine tender. While recovering from a leg injury at Portsmouth, Naval Hospital, he met his wife Nancy L. Thurber. They married on December 18, 1958. Following his Naval service, Bill went to work for Chrysler in Dayton and retired in 1993 after 29 years. Longtime member of the Brethren Church of New Lebanon. Preceded in death by his father Virgil Ballard and 2 brothers as infants. Survived by his wife of 49 years Nancy of New Lebanon: daughter Debby Ballard of Kettering, OH: son & daughter-in-law David & Melissa Ballard of Lexington, KY: grandsons Ryan and Logan Ballard of Lexington: mother Sarah Ballard of Waverly, OH: sisters Jean Woods of Centerville, OH and Retha Boyd of West Union, OH: brother Donald Ballard of Liberty, TX: and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 12:00 Noon on Monday, August 4, 2008 at the Robert L. Crooks Funeral Center at Preble Memory Gardens - 3377 US Rt. 35 - West Alexandria, OH. Pastor Bill Walk presiding. Friends may call on the family from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM Monday at the funeral home. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimers Assn. or Hospice of Dayton. Interment Preble Memory Gardens Cemetery.


WILLIS, Jr. , William "Bill", 88, died of pneumonia on June 2, 2008 at The Heartlands Retirement Community in Ellicott City, MD. A native of Atlanta, Georgia, Bill graduated ninth in his class from the U. S. Naval Academy in 1941 and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the USS Hoe. After World War II ended, Bill served as Executive Officer of the USS Skipjack and the USS Tiru, and as Commanding Officer of the USS Greenfish. In 1960 Admiral Rickover tapped Bill for the U. S. Navy's nuclear program. Bill became the Blue skipper of SSBN Sam Houston, a submarine propelled by nuclear power which carried ballistic missiles. After retiring from the Navy in 1964, Bill was recruited by the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab in Howard County, MD, where he worked for 20 years in the submarine division. After retiring from APL, Bill spent his time on his favorite activities: tennis, fishing and tying flies, hunting, and doing cabinetry in his shop. He joined the Clarksville Lions Club and devoted volunteer time to the Lazarus Foundation. Bill is survived by his wife of 66 years, Anne Brooks Willis; one son, William Paul Willis III of Skamania, WA; one daughter, Rebecca Anne Willis Gabor, of New Kensington, PA; three grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Visiting hours at Claret Hall, 6020 Daybreak Circle, Clarksville, MD, will be 2 - 4:30 P.M. on Sunday, August 24, 2008. Funeral and burial services will be held at 3:00 P.M. on August 25 at Arlington National Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made in Bill's name to Chesapeake Bay Foundation, 6 Herndon Avenue, Annapolis, MD 21403, National Wildlife Federation, 1100 Wildlife Center Drive, Reston, VA 20190-5362, WBJC, 6776 Reistertown Road, Suite 202, Baltimore, MD 21215, and WETA, 2775 South Quincy Street, Arlington, VA 22206.
